That's right, it's called child support and alimony. Let's say you have two kids ages 8 and 10. You are required to pay $1200 in child support and alimony per month. Over the next 10 years you will pay out at least $260,000. This is a loss of $10K, not including lawyer fees. This also doesn't include any increases in child support due to your salary increases. What if you took the 250K, invested it in a income property and felt about 10% appreciation per year for 10 years, then you're property would be worth 590K with no mortgage. After property taxes you'd still be up 500K at least. I'm not saying I'd do it.
