Decisions parents don't approve of........

Ok, so far I haven't embarrassed, pissed off, dissapointed, nor infuriated my parents, for the most part that is.

However, I was just hired for a job that pays more than most of my friends are making, and in my personal life, im crafty and like working with my hands.

I;m the one that built all the PC's, I built the xbox into what it is, i installed the surround sound, i do all the electrical stuff in the house. I;m basically my parents handyman.

Not to complain, I love doing that kinda stuff, but now that I have this job, my ideas have become more feasible to attain.

I have 2 of them.

1) Build an arcade machine.

Yes, build an entire machine by hand, from scratch. Ive found plans on how to do it, have most of the tools. The entire project should cost about $1500.

2) Restore a car.

This, i believe, is my everest. I wanted to buy a old, running car ('58 Deville) and slowly buy parts, and fix it up till its stock. I didnt want to win shows with it, just to make it my pride and joy.

Needless to say my parents think both ideas are ridiculous and unneeded, but i don't.

Do you guys have any stories of ideas you guys had, but the folks shot down?

Opps..misssed the last part of the thread. I once built a bike from scratch. I used my grass cutting money and built it peice by piece. My parents thought it was a bad idea and I should just buy one off the rack...nothing fun about that!

So, I built it...3 months later it was stolen. I found out who stole it...remembered the people who stole it were "scary" individuals...and didn't get my bike back. Then last year I learned one of the guys who stole it is in prison for murdering several people in my old neighborhood. Glad I didn't try to get the bike back!

Yes, this is a true story!

In high school I wanted to bring my girlfriend over and have sex in my bedroom, but my parents wouldn't let me. Friggin arseholes they were. You can only have sex in the backseat of a car so many times before you do permanent body damage ya know. The bed woulda been so much more comfortable. :D

Seriously...

Is restoring the car something you could do with dad? Even though he may not be as mechanically inclined as you, he might be able to help. My Dad and I restored a car together...good memories of that

...but my parents never really shot down anything...'course, I didn't have the money to take on the projects you are until I was out of their home and on my own...:(

If you can afford it just talk it out with them. The biggest thing parents are afraid of is that you'll get halfway through this and leave it. Nothing says dammit like a half restored car in the driveway or a shell of an arcade machine in the basement.

If you do it just make sure your in for the long haul.

Do the car though its a great time. I've helped my pops restore sailboats my entire life. The payoff is awesome when you finish it just make sure you finish it.

I think I've mentioned before that I'm hoping to buy a 1969 Camaro and restore it. My parents haven't outright said the idea is ridiculous but I can tell they aren't in favor of it, although I'm slowly wearing down my mom's resistance.

I'd encourage you to do a heavy amount of research on both projects before you start, and then go for it. Life is too short to worry about what other people think is ridiculous.

By the way, if you need another pair of hands I'm only about a half hour from Burke in the summer and I'd love to help with the car.

I wanted to play guitar all my life. My parents NEVER would get me a guitar or support me getting one. My dad had an acoustic, but he woudn't even teach me how to play.

But I finally saved up and bought one when I was 18, they laughed and said it was stupid etc...

Best thing I ever did. I've gotten more enjoyment from my guitars and drums and other musical stuff and had more experiences because of them, I can't imagine NOT playing guitar or other instruments.

My parents whole argument against guitar was that they made me take band in middle school and I had to play trumpet, because we had access to one. I hated it, but I learned to play. I did'nt continue on cause I never wanted to play trumpet in the first place, so they said guitar would be the same etc.... Blah blah blah.

When I have a kid, if there's something that they really want to do, (that's safe and legal... :D) then I will try to do my best to encourage them and help them.

Rebuilding the '58 would be fun, but from experience I can tell

you they can be a money pit. That's not even getting in concourse perfect.

My 13 yr old wants to build an old car or truck, like a late '50's truck or early 60's Galaxie. I've tried to explain to him about the

cost and time involved. Also finding parts can be a problem.

Find a nice car from the late 60's or early 70's. Parts may be

easier to come by. Will still be expensive.

I did 65-68 Mustangs a few years ago, so know how easy it's to

sink a ton of money in one.

Good look on rebuilding a car.

I bought a piece junk 69 Mach 1 when I was 13.

Didn't get it done til I was 18. A long project, but well worth it.

By the way I still have the car. But I'm afraid it needs restored again. I'm gonna keep it forever, I love that car.
