I was given some sad news today by my best friend, his mother's boyfriend of the past nine years who was diagnosed with lung cancer two weeks ago has now only about a month to live as the cancer has now spread to his brain and other parts of his body.

Instead of dying a long and painful death he has chosen to take a treatment that will subdue the cancer for about three weeks, thereafter he will succumb to the cancer without almost any pain.

This treatment will allow him to spend his last days doing anything he could ever dream of, which leads me to my point.

If you had a week left on this earth what would you? Would you travel and see as much of the world as you possible could? Would you make a roadtrip cross country? Maybe splurge on a case of 1972 Lafitte-Rothschild Bordeaux? Or spend your last days with your loved ones?

I'm sorry to pose this very serious question but I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since this afternoon.

Sorry about the news there semiskin. It's never easy during these times. If it helps, for me, I'd be with family as much as possible, make one road trip..... and then promptly find the time to tell everyone close to me how I feel about them and how much they have meant. Shame of it is, I'd have waited that long to do so.

I've been through this recently and theres only one answer.

Spend your last days with the people who mean the most to you. Tell them how much they mean to you, share stories, make sure they get the chance to tell you what you've meant to them.

Be together.

Time spent doing anything else is wasted time.

My mom died of lung cancer last year...like this gentleman, it had spread to her brain (and I'm sure everywhere else). She hung on for a long hellish week of waiting. But before she drifted into a semi-coherent state, she called each of her kids into her room one at a time. When it was my turn, she pulled me close and whispered just one sentence.

'You were my sweetest one'.

Man, I can't tell you how much those words stay with me.

Of course, knowing my Mom, she probably said them to my brother and sister too :)

some really touching stuff has already been posted here. luckily, ive never had to experience this firsthand with any friend or relative, but i agree with whats already been said.

taking a roadtrip or 'seeing the world' in your last few weeks doesnt seem to amount to much if you're not doing it with the people who really matter in your life. but i guess that goes for every day, and not just your last.

Tim McGraw lost his Dad, Tug McGraw recently and wrote a song on his new album about it

Artist/Band: McGraw Tim

Lyrics for Song: Live Like You Were Dying

Lyrics for Album: Live Like You Were Dying

He said: "I was in my early forties,

"With a lot of life before me,

"An' a moment came that stopped me on a dime.

"I spent most of the next days,

"Looking at the x-rays,

"An' talking 'bout the options an' talkin’ ‘bout sweet time."

I asked him when it sank in,

That this might really be the real end?

How’s it hit you when you get that kind of news?

Man whatcha do?

An' he said: "I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,

"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.

"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,

"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."

An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,

"To live like you were dyin'."

He said "I was finally the husband,

"That most the time I wasn’t.

"An' I became a friend a friend would like to have.

"And all of a sudden goin' fishin’,

"Wasn’t such an imposition,

"And I went three times that year I lost my Dad.

"Well, I finally read the Good Book,

"And I took a good long hard look,

"At what I'd do if I could do it all again,

"And then:

"I went sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,

"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.

"And I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,

"And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying."

An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,

"To live like you were dyin'."

Like tomorrow was a gift,

And you got eternity,

To think about what you’d do with it.

An' what did you do with it?

An' what can I do with it?

An' what would I do with it?

"Sky diving, I went rocky mountain climbing,

"I went two point seven seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu.

"And then I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter,

"And I watched Blue Eagle as it was flyin'."

An' he said: "Some day, I hope you get the chance,

"To live like you were dyin'."

"To live like you were dyin'."

"To live like you were dyin'."

"To live like you were dyin'."

"To live like you were dyin'."
