MikeB
Ok, by now most of you know that I am a 76er fan. I certainly realize that the series is far from over, and chances still are that the Lakers will take us. But I think one thing that we all can agree on, Laker fan or not, is that competition makes this series better tenfold. Who wants to see a sweep? A nice competitive series is much more entertaining. We have one. Sixers win game one for the East. Go David!
88Comrade2000
Booooooooooo. Lakers lost, though it wasn't unexpected. I think Lakers will still win. It will go to 6 games though 7 games wouldn't be shocking. What would be shocking? The Sixers sweep the Lakers. One thing that really irates me about the NBA finals, they start the damn games so late. It's close to 9:30 before they actually start playing. They should do all the pre-game before 9 and have tipoff at 9pm sharp.
Ignatius J.
yeah, but for those of us who live in LA and want to see these games, they need to start that late. It's a compromise. No one wants a game at 3 pm on a weeknight. -DB
indyskinsfan
RDSKNS2000, It's a West coast thing I guess as far as scheduling goes. I get lucky with it, since I have a 5 inch screen in my workstation and I am the only here at night. Otherwise I'd only catch the beginning to the middle of a game. I say raise the stakes even higher. Make it a "3-game" series and have a Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday format. Those gamblers would go nuts
hail2skins
I'm not rooting for the Sixers by any stretch, but it still amazes me how little respect they were given in light of the Lakers streak. Philly has been on the rise for several years and their 56-26 regular season (same as Lakers) wasn't exactly chopped liver......during the season it seemed like a lot of people considered them a strong candidate to win it all, barring the loss of Iverson. With all the talk about how the Lakers were going to dominate, you would've thought they were playing the Wizards in the Finals!!
Om
Though by doing so I have to admit that I was listening to Jim Rome for a while yesterday ... somebody called in from DC with an anecdote that will forever change the way I view Dikembe Motumbo. To hear this guy tell it, he was in a crowded bar in Georgetown during Deke's tenure with the Hoyas, when the man himself came striding in. He goes to the middle of the room, spreads him arms wide (which means something when you've got an 8' wingspan), and says, in that wonderfully deep and rich accent of his ... "Okay ... who wants to sex Motumbo?" ... and the room quickly "cleared." Now I obviously don't know if the story is apocryphal or not, but I nearly busted a gut. Just thought I'd share. redman
That's why he's defensive player of the year, Om. He's not known for his scoring and no one takes it to the hole with him. As for the Lakers, I attribute that to a combination of their rust and to Philly's tenacious team play. The Lakers aren't in bad shape when they can take the best Eastern Conference team - the one with the Def. Player of the Year; the Sixth Man award and, needless to say, the MVP - to OT while getting basically nothing at all from Kobe; no offense from Fisher or Horry; and having Shaq revert to his old free throwing ways. After ten days off allowing them to read all the press about how great they are, they needed a punch in the mouth. And it looks promising matching Tyronne Lue up on Iverson defensively. That being said, we saw everything about why the Sixers are an exciting team and why Iverson is so great. Even when Iverson was basically shut down during the second half, he never took a play off (are you listening Randy Moss?) and was there at the end when he finally got some more scoring opportunities. The rest of that team contributed within their scheme. That's a well-coached, disciplined and determined team. It's gonna be fun to watch the rest of the way. I now think the Lakers will win in six. (I previously predicted five.) ------------------ "Loosen up, Sandy baby. MikeB
Redman-- Kobe didn't do well because the Sixers keyed on him. I think he is in for a long series. The Sixers will let Shaq score, you really don't have a choice. So why waste time doubling him. Single him, and bring help if needed. This keeps the lanes crowded. The Sixers D is what caused Kobe to play that way--not because he is "off". Giving the Lakers credit for taking the Sixers to OT is ridiculous. THEY where supposed to smash us. They where favored 22-1 sweep. They where 11 pt favorites. The game was in their house, with their crowd! Philly stole their heart and home court advantage, and dismissed their "greatest team of all" hopes. Remember, the series is a 2-3-2 format. Let them win on Friday... then it's three here, in our house! (I am not saying the Sixers win the series, but I will say it is going 6 or 7) ------------------ <IMG SRC="http://a4.g.akamaitech.net/7/4/623/001/nfl.com/images99/Redskins/ftp_was.gif" border=0>
NavyDave
The Game wasn't a fluke. The Zen Master was out coached. THe 76ers played georgetown in your face basketball. That was the main reason I said philly wouldn t be swept. It's very similar to the original AFC passing offenses of the 80's vs The NFC Smashmouth and philly is the smashmouth. Even with blind refs not helping them out philly showed their true grit and can only get better. ------------------ Yes I'm paid to think and I need a raise
redman
Goliath Ties it Up. So much for Kobe's long series. And what are Iverson's stats since the point in Game 1 when Lue started guarding him, anyway? ------------------ "Loosen up, Sandy baby. Om
Seems to me there's two ways of looking at last night's game. You either saw L.A. getting their feet under them and taking command, ready to take over the series, or ... You saw a Philly team stay right with the defending champions, on their own court, while getting a 30% shooting performance from Iverson and really poor foul shooting. Oh yeah ... and with the next 3 at home. Either way, I can't wait for Sunday night.
redman
There's no doubt that this series is much better than most media pundits - and Laker fans - expected. It's gonna be a war, no matter what the results, in Philly. Kobe's gonna hear it from the fans non-stop. There's some interesting analysis on the coaching and the matchups this morning in the LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/sports/reports/2001/nbaplay/lat_strategy010609.htm ------------------ "Loosen up, Sandy baby. NavyDave
Iverson needed some NFL refs to call those holding and hands to the face penalties that the NBA refs just can't call against the Lakers. Lakers aren t that impressive ------------------ Yes I'm paid to think and I need a raise
