Eagles defense or Giants and Vikings offenses?

Two things that I take from the eagles games

1.Mcnabb looks awesome/TO looks great too!

2.Philly's defense doesn't scare me at all. (How many times can you count on penalties/fumbles to keep opponents out of the endzone.)

Philly is still the team in the east. Thank you to the schedule makers for us not getting them until Nov.

We will be in the mix:logo: :helmet:

MNF will be huge for you guys. I'll be pulling for you, even though I view the Redskins as a bigger threat than Dallas at this point, I can't bring myself to root for the Cowboys.

The Vikings failed to convert opportunities in the red zone while the Eagles were better manage their game on offense.

Philly is a better team than Minnesota. Minnesota has two or three top tier players that get a lot of ink, but the depth isn't there.

On defense the Vikings are thin and won't beat top clubs come December and the close to the playoffs, not that I think Minny will beat the better teams on its schedule.

As far as the Giants go, the next time they meet the Eagles will probably beat them 31-17 again.

There is about a 14 point gap on the scoreboard in terms of the relative talent on both clubs.

And the Eagles have the added advantage of having a core group of players that have been together the past couple of years.

Good post jpgirth.

Couple of other thoughts.

The Vikings seem to be a bigger threat outside of the red-zone. When you fight a boxer with a KO punch, you keep them close. That where Phil. D can play better - less yardage for the CB's to cover.

I also want our QB play to be better by the time we play them.

Do you think this is more because of the Eagles defense or is it the fault of the offense of the two teams they played?

I think it's obviously the Eagles defense. In a lot of ways, they make their own luck in the red zone by their effort and scheme.

It's just been happening for too long now for it to be anything else but "the way they do it".

As for it biting them in the end, it may- it did last year (though not as much as the loss of Westbrook and lack of a go-to type WR).

They are still vulnerable against the run (and will continue to be), but as long as they stay healthy, they shouldn't have a problem being better against it than they were last year.

They shut down the run last night and blew up a good line in all phases. Against the Giants, a Tiki run with the game out of reach made it appear that they were a little worse than they were.

The other reality is the Eagles D is a work in progress- I don't even think the Eagles coaches know what they have yet.

They have a much improved d-line with Kearse, Burgess back from 2 years of injury, an improving (and currently healthy) Mcdougle, the addition of Hugh in a part time role, and the return of Hollis Thomas.

Their LBs should be better than last year, but are still small and wear down.

Their safety play is excellent, but their two corners (while already proven to not be slouches) aren't shut down type players at this point in their careers and no one will know what they are until they get an extended period of time to prove themselves.

The hope is the defense stays healthy and the offense continues to click. If both of those things happen, they will pile up a lot of wins again, but it's still impossible to know how far they can go.

Obviously, the Eagles play in the red zone, after going on for so long, and consistently, is not a fluke.

So two points.

- Ike Reese said Jim Johnson has no philosphy about 'bend but don't brake'. It just happens.

- Andy Reid, made an interesting point. Perhaps a way of rationalization of the teams steller red zone defense has to do with its speed.

They obviously sacrifice bulk, for speed on defense. And in the red zone, speed has alot to do with everything that happens. Perhaps that gives them a big edge there.

Yup, that's legit.

Their philosophy isn't "let them do whatever they want until they hit the 20".

They basically preach 3 things:

- Attack the QB to force turnovers

- Limit touchdowns

- Don't give up the big play

I'm sure they would be happier just shutting offenses down, but they will sacrifice the run D to keep smaller, quicker guys in there for a better pass rush...just the way Johnson likes it.

I miss the JJ defense of 01'and 02'. This whole philosphy of giving up yardage between the twenties but chomping dow in the redzone is quite frustrating on the fan. I can't argue with it's effectiveness though. I fear I will be subjected to this more often now that the offense is proving it's ability to outscore the opposition.

JJ, bring back the blitz!!! On a side note... Had it not been for Culpeppers size and speed, Kearse would have had a fine statistical evening. He was in the backfield all night!
