bubba9497
TIKI: WE'VE GOTTA KEEP RUNNING BALL http://www.nypost.com/sports/giants/28846.htm September 19, 2004 -- The Giants are facing a blitz-happy Redskin defense today that allowed an NFL-low 30 yards on 15 carries in their season-opening win over Tampa Bay. But RB Tiki Barber said not only did the Bucs give up on the run too quickly, so did the Giants in their season-opening loss at Philadelphia. "I think Tampa gave up on the run too early. That's what we're good at right now, running the ball. We have to keep ourselves in a manageable game, give ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter," Barber said. When asked if the Giants gave up too soon, he said, "We maybe did. It started to get out of hand; we have to stay calm in those situations." When a reporter said most new coaching regimes get a honeymoon period, and Barber was asked whether he expected patience from the fans, he quipped, "None at all. This wasn't a honeymoon, this was a shotgun [wedding]." * On the prospect of facing RB Clinton Portis, who had an NFC-leading 148 yards in his Redskin debut, DE Osi Umenyiora said, "He's not Superman. He's a running back. We have to stay in our gaps, control him." The pitfalls of a loss are painfully obvious, besides being what amounts to 21/2 games back in the division. "We have to put it together when it really counts," said DE Michael Strahan. "We're 0-1 now. We can't afford to go 0-2, especially in this division." They've opened 0-2 on 17 occasions — most recently in 1996 — and had losing records in a dozen of those seasons. But 12 times they won Game 2 after dropping the opener, and in those seasons, eight times they had winning records, twice they finished .500 and just twice had losing marks. "It makes everyone feel better, makes the players more confident, gives the coaches something to be positive about and the fans something not to be upset about," Barber said. "It's paramount. We don't want to get behind the 8-ball." * Joe Gibbs was 6-7 at Giants Stadium in his first incarnation as Redskins coach, including a playoff loss in 1986 on Big Blue's first Super Bowl run. Not surprisingly, he has plenty of Meadowlands memories. "Yeah . . . they're all bad. I'd say it's probably one of the toughest places in the world to coach or play," Gibbs said. "I can remember a number of games there, and I've got to tell you, I don't remember a lot of good endings to them."
afparent
Yes, he is 5-7 at Giants Stadium. He was also 5-7 on opening day, but we won. He is 61-9 when his team rushes for 150 yds and 32-0 when he wins the turnover battle. HAIL!

Oh, how I wish when the game is over, and Portis has hung 150 or so on them, that he would take his jersey off and have a BIG RED "S" underneath!! Now THAT would be funny. [/b] Yeah, but now he go's into Giants Stadium against a different coach, and a different team. Don't get me wrong, we can't take ANY team lightly. I've read other quotes from Bucs defenders, pointing out that Portis' big run was the result of a blown assignments on the Bucs D, although they do admit that it was Portis' speed that prevented them from recovering from the mistake. But, thet's OK with me. If all he does is get 2-3 yards/carry while threatening to bust one loose, then we're controlling the game.
