MorgantownHokie88
The Redskins were idiots to cut him and not sign him to a long term deal. How much hell did we take all of last year? And now what, silence from the media. If we would have either kept his contract or signed him to a new deal, we wouldn't have Portis right now. Funny how they all seem to forget. I love Davis, but the guy is injury prone and also on the downside of his career, yet we were stupid not to re-sign him.
Oldskool
Its not because of Davis' skills diminishing (even though he is getting "old in the tooth") or his injuries. Its because we have Portis now.
big z
hindsight is 20/20.... the media is gonna blast us no matter what....that's cuz of snyder.... but it was a wise move to let Davis go, cuz Spurrier wasn't going to use him anyway, and he would have wanted the moon.....Carolina got a good deal though, and almost had a superbowl trophy to show for it.....almost. I'm still a Davis fan, although he did fumble last year and stole a game from us...it's karma....at least we have taylor to show for it. Get better Stephen.... Brother Redskin
you are absolutely correct. No disrespect to davis but I would rather have portis due to his still developing skills (not like he needs more) and relative young age. Definetly in hindsight it was not a bad decision to let him go. Spurrier did do a couple of good things for us even if gibbs did make the final decision on getting portis, he would not have even thought about it if we still had davis. I think the fact that he was getting the moon was one of the factors for letting him go... Seriously, though... his cap number could have been re-done, but SOS just didn't want him here. I'm still sad to see him injured, though. Nick
TheSteve
It's funny how everyone says SOS didn't want him here. The Redskins front office(Snyder) is the one who made the decision. Davis had too high of a cap number and obviously Snyder didn't really want him. Spurrier had no clue what a high cap number was. I think the main reason we went from 7-9, to 5-11 is because of the loss of Davis. With no back to hand it to well you see, we pass pass passed. At Florida Spurrier ran the ball, go look at the statistics. He just didn't do it conventionally.
Saint Joe
I agree somewhat and somwhat disagree. Just because we now have Portis doesn't fully justify our letting go of Davis. After all, our running back last year was Trung and we did finish 5-11. And if we had kept Davis, we wouldn't have Portis, but we probably would still have Champ. So I think the question comes down to - would you rather have Champ and Davis, or Portis and Springs. Personally, I'd rather have Portis and Springs, but that's not by much. You also have to consider that if we had kept Davis on roster, we may never have gotten Coles either. Most importantly, had Davis been on our roster, Spurrier may never had been fired, which means Gibbs would never have been hired.
skin_finatic
actaully i started hating davis during our first year with the ol ball coach. davis would fumble in the worst kind of situation everytime! then he would act like he is hurt. Obviously, you'd rather have portis for the long run, but davis was let go for nothing. And to get portis, a top 5 corner and a second round pick were traded away. Little bit of a difference. OrangeSkin
Think about it this way: If we still had Davis, Spurrier may still be coaching here and Gibbs would be in Atlanta. I think we made the right decision.
