they don't cheer loud enough?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – All the expectations the Giants have for significant improvement this season will not come to fruition if they do not play better at home this year than they did in 2003.

Head Coach Tom Coughlin wants to utilize 'the greatest fans in the world' this Sunday when the Giants host the Redskins at Giants Stadium.

Last season, the Giants won their first game in Giants Stadium, but lost their last seven. No less an authority than Wellington Mara called the home record “shameful.” This Sunday, the 0-1 Giants play their home opener against the Washington Redskins, who beat Tampa Bay to start the season.

The Giants last won at home on Sept. 7, 2003, a 23-13 victory over St. Louis. That afternoon, Rams quarterback Kurt Warner heard the best the Giants crowd had to offer as he fumbled six times and was sacked six times. Now the Giants starting quarterback, Warner hopes those same fans make it unpleasant for Mark Brunell and the rest of the Redskins this week.

”I’m hoping it’s going to be crazy,” Warner said today. “I’m hoping it’s going to be loud, I hope it’s going to be intimidating for Washington to come in here. I hope it’s just a tremendous electric atmosphere. It does nothing but help us, gives us an added edge, gives us an added excitement for the game. But hopefully it also does a little from the intimidating factor for your opposing team or makes it a little bit harder for them to execute and run plays and cause whatever discrepancy that might be to play into our favor.”

The players who were here last year are eager to show the home crowd that this is a new and improved team.

“We need to give them something,” said defensive end Michael Strahan. “You want to forget about the year before, but it’s kind of hard, especially when you really didn’t win at home.

“It’s definitely a tough game against a good team, a team that’s playing with a lot of confidence right now. But we have to win this game. We have to give our fans something to cheer about, something to look forward to.”

Head coach Tom Coughlin is well aware of the importance of winning at home. In his eight years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Coughlin was 40-24 in home games, including a glittering 28-4 record from 1996-99.

Coughlin, who doesn’t talk about last season, made it clear he wants the Giants fans to do their part this week.

“One of the oldest axioms in football is: ‘Win at home, win at home,’” Coughlin said. “You are at home; you are in front of your home fans. You want to utilize your fans, the greatest fans in the world, to the best of your ability. You want to get the fans in the game. You want it to be a very pro-Giant crowd that is loud and supportive of our football team. That’s what it should be at home. That is what I am expecting it to be at home.”

I just had to. It was too funny to pass up.

Uh oh, Tom Coughlin is going to be fining Monday Night Football too!!

"Monday Night Football": Broadcasts will be on a five-second delay for the rest of the season, a reaction to the furor caused by last season's Super Bowl halftime show.

The move is just a precaution, an ABC spokesman said.

At halftime of New England's win over Carolina in the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Janet Jackson's brassiere, a wardrobe "malfunction" that exposed her right breast to a TV audience of some 90 million. The Super Bowl was broadcast on CBS.

A pregame concert before the season opener between New England and Indianapolis was broadcast with a 10-second delay on ABC to prevent a repeat of the Super Bowl embarrassment.

After the Super Bowl, the Federal Communications Commission received more than 500,000 complaints about the broadcast. The commission is reportedly considering a fine of $550,000 against CBS for violating broadcast decency standards.

No MNF for the Giants. ABC tries not to schedule semi-pro teams on Monday Night.
