Guest fuji869
We all know that in 1999 St. Louis Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV with Kurt Warner @ QB and a arsenal of offensive weapons (Marshall Falk, Isaac Bruce, Tory Holt etc) . In 1998 Tony Banks was the Rams QB and did not make the playoffs.

My question is how many of these weapons did Banks have while he was in St. Louis? Not to take anything away from Kurt Warner but if Tony Banks had pretty much the same weapons that Warner had and could not win that should say something to the Tony Banks Supporters (if there are any left) about him as the long term starter for the Redskins
Henry
I don't want Banks to be our starter any more than you do, but I do have to two words for you: Marshall Faulk
Uptown Skins
Yeap. Henry points out two main words: Marshall Faulk. Plus the Rams drafted Torry Holt in 99, the same draft in which we took Champ. Here is a link to St. Louis Rams 1999 Roster:

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/rosters/hist/1998/stl.html

What makes me laugh is the stats from that year for the Rams:

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/stats/1998/stl.html

Just look at laugh at their rushing leaders then!!!

The Rams will come with on Sunday! Art
Worry not Fuji.

In 1998, the Rams were led by the incomparable running game provided by June Henley, Amp Lee and Greg Hill. The team's leading receiver was Amp Lee. Bruce was hurt that year and Hakim was a young buck working his way through while Ricky Proehl was the best receiver.

The Rams had a bit of a problem in the talent department that year and it wasn't just with Mr. Banks. mardi gras skin
All that new talent has to weigh down their cap sooner or later. Is Hakim the only talent expected to leave?
NavyDave
The next Cap Casualty will be Faulk when his 2k3 salary is supposed to be around 9 million so they will renegotiate or go with Candidate.

They unloaded Cap killing contracts for first rounders thanks to those fools in KC and Tenn. @DCGoldPants
Look, the Rams have been VERY luck with the schedule and where they play. They are a dome team who gets to play the superbowl in a dome again. If the game was in tampa this year, I think they would only be favored by 3.5 point and wouldn't win unless the weather is perfect.

They ***** and moan about not getting respect. They didn't do it at milehigh in the snow like the bronco's so I seem them as a average superbowl level team. If I lined up all the Superbowl winning teams......1-35(?) They would be somewhere between 28-35 for me. There are truely great historic teams that were so much better.

Now to the question. Banks is garbage but when Kurt was out last year Trent Green did damn well in the system leading me to believe if you put Warner in KC and Trent in St. Louis, Green could of been MVP and Warner would be playing golf right now. bulldog
The Rams have been very smart. They traded away Trent Green and Kevin Carter so as not to tie up cap space in players they really didn't need.

And then they paid players like Isaac Bruce and Marshall Faulk excellent but not exorbitant salaries to continue on with the team. Torry Holt is still working on his rookie contract.

This year's crop of players mostly came cheap. Damione Lewis, Archuleta and Pickett were all draft picks and are working on rookie contracts.

Aeneas Williams had his contract restructured in the offseason and Mark Fields came at a much reduced price after being released by the Saints.

Other contributors this year including Chidi Ahanatou and Jeff Zgonina on the defensive line were vet minimum pickups who have paid off nicely.

As said before the greatest thing the Rams have done right is to pay a large sum ONLY TO PRODUCTIVE PLAYERS.

You don't see a Deion Sanders type player on the Rams pocketing a huge amount of money and then not producing over the long-term.

The Rams may lose some players around the fringe as all Super Bowl teams do, guys like Hakim and Tony Horne from last year, but these players are replaceable. There will always be good players willing to come play for less when the chance to get national recognition on a Super Bowl team is in the offing.

The Rams core on offense is Warner, Bruce, Faulk, Holt, Pace and Timmermann. Those are the pro bowlers.

And they aren't going to be losing them anytime soon.

with that core they will be able to fill in around them with competent people for the next couple of years, assuming Warner or Faulk say doesn't suffer a career injury.

No, I have a lot of respect for the Rams' front office and what they have accomplished.

I thought they were crazy to field a defense with 8 new starters in one season. But they did it and made it work to the tune of finishing #3 in the NFL during the regular season.

Faulk for a #2 and #5 picks was the best trade in the last 10 years in the NFL.

The #2 and #4 for Aeneas Williams, despite his being 33 years old, was another great deal as it gave the secondary an immediate plug-in for the #1 corner spot, which had been the team's primary weakness in 2000.

Good trades for value, good draft picks that produce and signing players to reasonable contracts for the skills they bring to the table.

Sounds like the kind of organization the Redskins are trying to become.
ace33
Actually I think why there so sucessful is the upgrade at Offensive line!

I mean faulk is a stud, and there wideouts are very good.and warner just fits the system so well.

But with the addition of pace and so has to help.

The main reason why their so good though,i believe;is their team spirit and ora.

They believe there the best and in reality,to be a champion, you have to have that attitude for it show like it does.

and i have to agree with them because until someone puts the fear in there eyes they will continue to be the best.

Thats why with spurriers attitude and gameplan was the best thing that could have happened for us.

I dont know how long it will take, but we will be better than them soon!

I just know it.

After all we might have a simular style like them.

That may be what it takes to be them. bulldog
My guess is the team that foils the Rams style will be one that does not mimic them. It will be a team that plays killer defense and runs the ball well but also has a franchise quarterback that can make the big play to keep the Rams on the defensive.

In some ways I think a team built along the lines of the 1998 Broncos would be a good match for the Rams.

Davis was a 1,500+ yard rusher, the team had a solid offensive line and a franchise quarterback that was accurate and able to make ALL the throws necessary in the NFL.

On defense they had a good pass rush from the front seven and a secondary that played physical man up coverages. @DCGoldPants
I think you put the 98 Broncos V. the 2001 Rams in the Superbowl in Miami on a day where the wind is more than just a light breeze. The Rams get beaten by 3 scores.
Riggo-toni
Even though I'm a Skins fan, I think I have to stand up here and say the Rams are an incredible team. 2 Superbowl appearances in 3 years, and probably a couple more before we take care of a few weak spots on the roster and regain our glory days. You can't win as many games, set as many scoring records, and have the #3 defense in the NFL and still be considered one of the weakest teams to ever win a Super Bowl. Green was the 2nd highest rated passer last year while Warner was injured, but I think he still had a losing record as a starter. Nobody gets rid of the ball more quickly than Warner, and nobody is better at aiming the ball just enough ahead of the WR to allow for more RAC. Still, Martz is like Gibbs; he can turn anybody into the league's best.
