Redskins_SF
Although we won the game today, there were still a lot of mistakes that were made that could of cost us the game. Here are a few questions that I'd like to get answered: 1. What happened with the poor coverage on our kickoff team? 2. Why was the center / quarterback exchange a problem today? And what happened when Raymer replaced Friedman during the game? 3. Portis did not seem effective during the second half of the game. Was it due to the flu, conditioning, or a stout Bucs defense? 4. Why wasn't the challenging flag thrown on the Brunell spot, or the supposed Tim Brown reception? Aren't we paying a former replay official $$$ to help the coach make these calls? 5. Why was Sean Taylor's play limited, especially at the beginning of the game? Was it due to rookie nerves, coaching confidence, or something else? That's it for now. Feel free to add questions, or provide answers if these issues have already been answered. Glad to see us start off with a win. Go Skins!
bubba9497
3. Portis did not seem effective during the second half of the game. Was it due to the flu, conditioning, or a stout Bucs defense? in the 3rd quarter TB defense was dominating but Portis looked awesome in the 4th quarter.... not sure why you are questioning this. He can't always get 5 plus yards every carry. 4. Why wasn't the challenging flag thrown on the Brunell spot, or the supposed Tim Brown reception? Aren't we paying a former replay official $$$ to help the coach make these calls? Gibbs inexperience with the replay system, and not looking for it. I am sure that is something that will be discussed in the meetings, and he will work on to improve 5. Why was Sean Taylor's play limited, especially at the beginning of the game? Was it due to rookie nerves, coaching confidence, or something else? They said on TV, that he was sicker ythan was released to the media, this past week, and the coaches didn't want to over do it with him early. At least with a competent coaching staff I would expect them to fix this.[/b] 2. Why was the center / quarterback exchange a problem today? And what happened when Raymer replaced Friedman during the game? I would assume it was because Friedman had already botched 2 snaps earlier. So, they went with Raymer, obviously that didn't help. I'd also expect to see this fixed. 3. Portis did not seem effective during the second half of the game. Was it due to the flu, conditioning, or a stout Bucs defense? I think he was effective. But the Bucs do have a good defense, and our offense was showing that it was tired from the last week of practice. 4. Why wasn't the challenging flag thrown on the Brunell spot, or the supposed Tim Brown reception? Aren't we paying a former replay official $$$ to help the coach make these calls? We all would like to know. I would think it's probably that Joe Gibbs is not very comfortable with the system just yet, so he's not taking any chances. 5. Why was Sean Taylor's play limited, especially at the beginning of the game? Was it due to rookie nerves, coaching confidence, or something else? He was ill, they kept him out mostly as a precautionary measure.
Ghost of
Smith is our ST coach. His units invariably suck. His hire was the one I didn't understand, other than he worked in Buffalo for G Williams.

Johnny_Blaze
Taylor got beat on that one play where Joey Galloway botched the catch in the endzone. Taylor hasnt adjusted to the speed of NFL yet.

SkinsRback04
1) Antonio Pierce is not used on special teams while he's starting at backer. It costs us...among other things. 2) Replay showed what happened with the footwork of Raymer and the slanting Nose Tackle. It happens...but I bet it won't happen anymore. No answer yet as to why Raymer was in there for that one play. 3) Portis was running against an 8-9 man box all game long and still avg'd 3 yds without the 64 yd. run. That and the fact he increased his carry load to near 30 from an avg. of 20 with Denver says a great deal. 4) There is no SATISFACTORY explanation. It could cost us games and MUST be straightened out. 5) Taylor missed some practice time early in the week and the Lott start was the conservative call to make. Also, Taylor was used in specific packages and Gibbs explained those packages were only used a few times in this game. Peace Out.
ArmchairRedskin
During Smith's stay in Buffalo, the Bills' special teams prospered. His unit finished third in the league in kickoff coverage in 2003 and finished in the Top 10 in field goal percentage, points per game and both gross and net punt averages. http://www.redskins.com/team/cprofile.jsp?id=

I made that statement partially as a joke. Mainly because I was just reading the thread you created about Brunell. It was mainly a joke. Calm down bro! I deffinately have heard bad things about Smith, but I've also heard good things.
Johnny_Blaze
also, speaking of special teams... yeah there was some poor coverage on some of the special team kicks, I think James Thrash performed very well and showed why we picked him up from Philly. He is gonna be one of the key special teamers on this team.
ummagumma
Some experts please answer this for me. Will Gibbs try to get portis to the outside a little more? Less between the tackles. his last big run was when he made those awesome lateral steps and bounced outside. it's REALLY hard to run around the Bucs Defense. Am I naive and missing something here, or will gibbs adjust?
bubba9497
Let me add I watched the first half of the falcons/49ers. They looked like the keystone cops compared to how professional the Redskins looked today. This was the first regular season game.... even with Gibbs coaching you can't expect perfection the first game. The positive out weighed the negatives 10 fold today. Ghost of
I'm just glad the Skins excelled in 1) Blocking 2) tackling 3) knowledge of their schemes Can you really ask for more than that in the first game?

You have to run inside as well to set up the outside run... and play action. Just because a play gets only 2 or 3 yards it isn't necessarily a bad play. mookie0720
Bram reported on the 5th Quarter show on 980, that he had reports that Sean Taylor had missed a meeting sometime this week, and although the team didn't make it public, it's believed to be the real reason why Taylor was out of the game in many packages. Did you see that one play where the returner looked like he had a TD and Thrash came flying down the side to catch him. He was going so fast I actually thought he was gonna overrun the guy. Even though the play was brought back, Thrash saved that return.

I wasn't complaining, just observing, and what I mean was more like pitching out so he's already on the edge and not running to it. Sensitive, aren't we? Sensitive, aren't we? not at all.... just answering your question I might also add the Bucs have outside speed on defense making sweep plays difficult to run. I am sure Gibbs didn't want to call anything that might have put the offense in a bad situation.
