Portis Subject of False Internet Report

By Jason La Canfora

Washington Post Staff Writer

Thursday, September 9, 2004; 6:16 PM

Clinton Portis was the subject of some internet hijinx yesterday when someone created a web page, made to look like those on the NFL.com site, reporting that the running back was out for up to three months because of an injury suffered lifting weights.

CBS Sportsline posted a short item on its home page reporting the injury under the headline: Breaking News. It said Portis would be sidelined eight to 12 weeks.

Sporting News Radio began feverishly calling other media outlets to check the validity of the report and news quickly spread to Redskins Park.

While all of this was going on Portis was already home. He practiced yesterday after holding a news conference. He did not lift weights yesterday -- "It's not even his day to lift," backup running back Ladell Betts said when asked about the report -- and team officials were baffled as to the orgin of the story as calls began to pour into the media relations office. The team quickly posted a story on its site letting fans know the Portis story was false.

Portis's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was informed of the story and quickly checked in with Portis. "There's absolutely no truth to that," Rosenhaus said.

A similar hoax apparently was done on Dallas offensive lineman Larry Allen on Wednesday. The NFL is investigating the false internet story, league sources said.

Yeah... i heard Scott Lynn break the story on 980 on my ride home and i nearly shyt myself..... and no, not hoping it was true.... never wish for injury on anybody.... just that is was SO out of the blue...... Steve and Andy and Bram were quick to dispel the story.....

btw.... i had no idea Scott Lynn on 980 was an Eagles fan until a few days ago..... was this common knowledge ????? that would be tough... imagine being a diehard Skins fan working on WIP up on Philly...... I guess you do what you gotta do to get the career going......

whatever, some folks are apparently having way too much fun with it.

someone sent me this other site that i guess is a "spoof" of the spoof?...

http://www.geocities.com/nflteamsnet/index.htm

:puke:

an obvious fake, with a bit more of a "humorous" touch added to it than the original joke article...but i guess it's easier to create this kind of fake crap than i thought.

i know Howard Eskin's been on WIP for years....isn't he a virulent anti-Eagles fan? at least that was the impression i got from listening to him, and the apparent loathing most eggo fans have of him.

eh, i always liked him because he always puts it like it is when talking about Philly sports...that is to say:

yeah...i usually post there more frequently.

the boards here are a dead give away for a "non work site" at the office...what with the black, burgundy and gold colors to no end.

the espn boards suck (too many damn error messages) but are less obvious and easier to navigate.

agree 100%...... but since they changed the format on the ESPN boards i'm not sure there has been more than 5 football related threads on the Eagles board........ it's bad
