steveo21
Frances lost its hurricane status Sunday afternoon, but that does not mean it can be written off as a significant storm system. Wind gusts over 30 mph were still widespread across much of Florida and into southern Georgia. Gusts above 50 mph are likely in some areas through the evening. The heaviest rain fell across east-central Florida, with widespread estimates of 6 to 12 inches. West Palm Beach received over 13.5 inches of rain from the storm. It was difficult to get rainfall tallies from other parts of eastern Florida because many of the automated weather instruments stopped reporting due to Frances' winds. The center of Tropical Storm Frances will re-emerge in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico overnight. While some strengthening is possible over open water, Frances may not reach hurricane status again. A second landfall is expected Monday afternoon along the Florida Panhandle. Heavy rain across the southeastern U.S. will be the biggest threat from the tropical system over the next several days. Three to six inches of rain are possible across some areas and flooding is a concern. Frances will continue to move northward up the Appalachian spine through the week. Elsewhere, Hurricane Ivan has become the third category 4 hurricane of the season with sustained winds of 135 mph. Hurricane watches are posted for Grenada and Barbados and more advisories will likely be issued over the next 12 hours. The forecast track of Ivan takes the powerful hurricane to the west-northwest over the next several days. This storm will need to be monitored closely over the next several days to see if there is any U.S. impact for next weekend.

Chopper Dave
They said at the beginning that this could be one of the worst hurricane seasons in recent history. And what the hell is up with Ivan? I went to bed last night and it was a Tropical Storm. All I know is that I'm not taking down my shutters until this one passes, too. If this thing comes at Florida, I'm picking up the bible, watch "The Passion", and go to Church every sunday like I'm supposed to be doing. Wow. Okay, I'm watching the Passion anyways, but Wow. Chopper Dave
Well, they're saying Ivan will hit some part of Florida barring a complete turn into the N. Atlantic. Hopefully (I hate to say this, because it's never good when another country/state is devistated) it will hit or go south of Hispanola and not cut north and kill us all. Skins24
Here's the forecasted track, but this will change many times between now and late next week.... http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ftp/graphics/AT09/refresh/AL0904W5+GIF/060258W5.gif
Chopper Dave
Thanks for that graphic. Looks like I'm in for it again. It could completely miss Hispanola, and if there's a high pressure system there, it could still hit S. Florida. Also, even if it hits Hispanola (as a cat. 5, possibly?), it'll still have plenty of time to regroup.
Tom [Giants fan]
Ivan is developing further south than Frances did. Therefore, it is over more tropical and warmer waters causing it to strengthen faster and probably greater than Frances. Don't be surprised if this thing turns into a category 5 hurricane. Hopefully, it won't reach Florida with that intensity. Unfortunately, as of right now, it looks as if it could follow a similar path. But let's all wish really hard it turns away from the U.S. And I hope it doesn't hit the Bahamas. They have enough damage from Frances. Ivan will finish that area off.
Chopper Dave
Well, if it does hit, expect my new name to be "Chopper Dave presents.... Wayne Newton's Hurricane Relocation Extravaganza!!!", because if we lose the house, we'll be moving out to Vegas. I'll probably end up de-committing to UF and going to USC, UCLA, or Stanford. Renegade7
Hey I'm a pretty carefree person. Ya'll can tell that. But this is one of those few occasions where I'm actually scared. I don't even live in florida, but eventaully this is going to effect me. There's only so many hurricane hits a state can take before it can't take anymore. This is just upper level weird. Is it just one of those years?
Chopper Dave
Yeah, basically one of those years. And from what I've heard from all of you guys, you non-Floridians are more scared for us than we are. It's a reality when you live down here. I wasn't here for Andrew, but basically after it hit, the mentality here is that you don't live your life fearing it, just respect it when it comes and deal with the aftermath. Pete
This is gonna be a screwed up week. We need gas in this area. The stations are hit and miss that have gas. The stores are gonna be a zoo. I didn't have much time to restock from Charley, and I'm gonna need some more lantern batteries. Oy:doh: I don't relish watching the season opener on a five inch B&W TV. Ivan is up to a cat 4, and this is starting to ware on me a bit. With any luck, I'll have time to get on the roof tomorrow or tuesday afternoon to resecure the tarps. They have held thus far, but third time's the charm:doh:

I wouldn't worry about make up days. My wife works for the local school district, and she said that the state will issue a waiver for the days. It's been done before, and with the ammount of schools having to close, it will screw up the state in a big way if they try to make up the days. There also waiving the class size rule at this point. You have many familys from other parts of the state that have had to relocate due to loss of their homes. SNAFU
