Will Portis get Goal-Line Carries

Will Joe Gibbs have Clinton Portis run any carries 5 yds and in at the endzone?? I sure hope he does, atleast 75% of the time. But what do u guys think?

A bruising back like the size of Tyrone Whitley to take some goal line carries wouldnt be back sometimes(ala 25% of the time). I would like a big back like this to be running those 4th and 1s and some 3rd and 2s, as much as i love Clinton Portis, and i do he's my favorite player in the league since he came in, I wouldnt mind him getting spelld once and a while on this short yardage carries.....................

Thoughts.............

I think Betts will probably get some short yardage work. He looked good in traffic and breaking tackles tonight. Although we did see Portis do it earlier in the preseason. I guess it will depend on the Defense.

How about giving it to Cooley? He laid a NICE hit after the catch today.

Die Hard,

Remember Gerald Riggs? Didn't Gibbs use him a lot instead of Byner at the goal line? I know Portis will be used in those situations, but I really think he'd be using a back like Cartright or Betts at the goalline more often. Am I wrong about that? I just remember Gibbs putting in Riggs because of his size. I'm not sure if my memory is right about that though.

I haven't forgotten about Riggs.

I didn't draft Greg Jones in the Mock Draft this year without a reason :)

I just happen to think it's not really necessary. You saw Betts break a couple of runs last night inside the 5. I think with a guy like Portis... you can bang it in there. He can run through holes.. and if they're closed.. he has the speed to take it outside.

Riggs was a nice luxury. Considering what we paid for him in draft picks.... Gibbs had to find SOMETHING for him to do.

But Byner was a solid rusher who could've punched those TDs in himself if Gibbs let him.

Was Portis used in goal line situations back in Denver? If so, there is no reason not to do so here. I'm not entirely sure Betts is more powerful than Portis, and while Betts has nice moves, he's not the ideal goal line back. I see Rock getting the ball in these situations. Anything beyond 5 yards out should be all Portis. :logo:

Good point Die Hard. I remember Riggs being a team player. I think that's why Gibbs liked to use him a lot. Maybe change-up and keeping Byner from taking a lot of a beating.

Either way, if Bugel gets that O-line to play all year like they did last night, I don't think it matters who they put in the back field to run it in. Put the water boy in there. He could run through those holes.

True, but then Ernest Byner had quite the history of fumbling, to say the least, before coming to Washington. I'm still not convinced that Riggs wasn't supposed to be the man when he was brought in to D.C. He led the team in yards and carries his first year even though injuries did keep him out of several games. Those same injuries allowed Ernest to shine. That and Coach Gibbs decided to run the hell out of Ernest. :) I remember the last SB season it seemed that whenever the skins needed that yard for a first down or a TD, in came Riggs more often than not. Guy could move a pile. As for Portis, that guy is special. No doubt he's going to see the ball in those sitiuations.

I personally think that short yardage situations are actually one of Portis' strong points. In the games I have seen of him he seems to excel at getting real low to the ground, hiding from the defenders and finding a hole to slip through. He may not be the biggest or strongest guy out there, but he runs very low to the ground and always keep the legs churning when he knows he needs more yards. He also does not fumble much as he runs with boths hands on the ball when in traffic.

That said I would not mnd seeing a big bruising back in there to spell him in certain situations. I personally would love to have a guy like John Ritchie from Philly for situations like that. But, Ritchie is a true fullback and his other talents would be wasted here.
