Rock and Simon Sit Out

Go Sultan! It's your night to shine!

Hope to see him in the first half after Betts is through.

It's either a very good or very bad sign that they're sitting Rock and Simon.

I hope they're not just letting Sultan play because he's considered expendable. I really can't see Gibbs and Co. wasting valuable preseason PT on a kid that they have zero interest in keeping. I've been wrong plenty of times before though...

Frankly I don't recall seeing one really good running play this preseason that was not mostly just good blocking. If you are wondering what I'm talking about look at the St. Louis film how Stephen Jackson just breaks tackles and moves the pile against us. I haven't seen anything like that by one of our runners yet. Everybody seems to go down on the first hit. I don't know if we have a true power back on the roster.

Gibbs hasn't featured Morton at all, and I don't expect him to in the preseason. I have this sneaking suspicision that Morton is going to get alot of the 3rd down and long work as well as most of the "joe washington" offensive package.

Normally I'd agree with you and what you say may still be possible. But, an intense coaching staff like ours, may not fully appreciate a laid back California boy like Morton. And, if they think he hasn't shown himself above some others, they may need to see something more from him before passing along the Joe Washington role to him.

I'm also wondering if they are shopping Betts. Regarding the upcoming roster cuts, Gibbs was saying on WTEM that they were really looking for guys that were on the field (both practice and in games). Betts unfortunately has not met that requirement, but Rock and Simon have. Its a tough choice either way.

Art,

you may be right, but at this point the evidence doesn't neccearily point to morton's exclusion. We saw a lot of ohalete before he was cut. Gibbs seems to take the guys who have assured themselves of thier positions off the field rather quickly. Morton has been non-existant.

To me, that points more towards a heavy role in the offense than likely cut. However, If there's an early drive where morton gets a significant number of carries, then it beomes a lot more difficult to call, as morton could be on his way out.

I can't believe alot of people are even debating this competion. Byner is really high on Betts and has said Betts can be a great back. You've heard Gibbs rave about Betts pass catching. You've watched Betts miss all the preseason then when he's healthy immediately become the #2 Rb he is a roster lock. Then we've seen Rock playing the #2 while he was out then #3 when he played last week. Gibbs has said 1 game does'nt change his mind. I think Rock is a lock has well. Simon had 1 good game catching the ball but Morton can do those same things and he is a lock. Hopefully Sultan can be put on the PS squad again this year. Simon is a goner he has'nt played the last 2 games.

Interesting how so many feel there is a Joe Washington role for the Skins. When we had Riggo for 1st and 2nd downs the JW role was needed to come out the backfield, catch passes and run draws, etc.

Portis can do it all. Yes he needs to rest on some snaps but 3rd down is what separates winners and losers and I dont see Portis coming out on 3rd downs. He's clearly faster and quicker than Morton or Betts and he can catch.

Oh yeah, and he can take it to the house with the best ever.

While I don't necessarily see a driving need for a Joe Washington type player I still see Gibbs giving a lot of that work to Morton. I ask you, do you want a guy in there trying to make 3rd and 8 who has been in the game for the last half dozen plays, carrying the rock and blocking much larger d-line guys, or a guy who is largely fresh? I am not saying that Morton is more talented than Portis at this, just that the drop off is not so much to warrent always leaving Portis in the game.

And I am not so sure that Portis is as fast as Morton is...

Morton stays.

Morton plays hard and does everything asked of him.

Now this could play out several ways. Maybe Rock and Simon are sitting because a trade is in the works fo Sultan or Betts, or maybe the staff needs to see more of Sultan before they decide to let Simon go and let Rock stay.

Pick whatever combination you want, but I really feel that Morton is a lock to make the squad.

Greg Williams was even quoted in a recent article saying that there is a lot to the process of these decisions - including practice and attitude about preparation throughout the entire off-season. - Something that none of us are able to witness.

The fact that Rock is sitting is probably just because he is hurt.

But I also think that the coaching staff has already made a decision or two.

Here is my final BOLD prediction on the RB's:

The locks at RB are:

Portis

Morton

Betts

The final spot is between Simon, Sultan and someone not currently on the roster.

- Rock and a WR and/or O-lineman will be shipped to Arizona for a conditional draft pick. ....Why? Because as much as we all love Rock, and the coaching staff admires his work ethic and dedication, he's a fullback - and we don't use a fullback in this system.

Arizona just put James Hodgins (their starting FB) on IR, they're thin on WR's and thin on the O-line and need depth at RB.

It is entirely possible we could include Betts in that package for a higher pick and keep Simon or bring in a Stacey Mack type. - just a hunch.

P.S. - I personally would love to see Betts and Rock both make the team.

I have no idea what the coaching staff has in mind for Chad Morton but tossing KR like that from the squad when Gibbs is such a special teams obsesser would be a mistake, IMO. The guy had minimal ST prep with Spurrier, but w/ the Jets he was VERY impressive. (That's why we brought him in!)

He will SO benefit from working for Joe Gibbs' special teams. I hope we hold him.
