The Sisko
I recently bought a new PC with an OEM version of Windows XP installed. First and most importantly I am having problems with not being able to open my yahoo mail account and worse it won't let me reply to threads on this message board:( I have tried changing the settings for cookies and popups with no luck. Secondly, is there any way to wipe the HD using Fdisk or some other similar command and re-install the OS to a separate partition with an OEM version ? Pete
Was this stuff working, and now has stopped, or has it been from the begining? XP gives you a system restore option to go back to a date and time of your choice.
BG
Do you have Norton products on there?
Fred Jones
Reference the OEM question, as long as you have the WinXP software, you can re-install the OS. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) means that Microsoft, in this case, won't offer any type of support. The software is the same, it just means Microsoft sold a copy to one of it's vendors for resale, like Dell or Gateway. You have to go to the company you bought the computer for any type of support. OEM software is always cheaper than the full retail version. Microsoft just won't offer any assistance, but the software is the same.
The Sisko
Thanks for your replies. This is a new machine and the e-mail/message board issues happened right out of the box. Therefore, I don't think anything is wrong with the software...it's just a settings issue. As for the OEM version of Windows XP. I realize I can reinstall the OS if anything happens. However what I want to do is re-install it to a separate partition than my data so that if anything happens to the OS I don't have to lose my data to wipe the OS and re-install. I'm just not sure if the Dell restore disk will allow me to do that.

BG
My Norton suggestion was maybe you have firewall setting that are preventing pop-ups. Maybe you need to update IE. Update to XP SP1? Can't wholly understand the problem. Any error messages?

I have heard that when you try to reinstall with an OEM restore CD and try to boot from it, it would give you an option to do a brand new installation where you can set the partitions. I don't know this firsthand though.
The Sisko
Thanks again guys. There were no error messages. All that happens is that when I try to check my e-mail on yahoo or try to reply to a post on this MB the browser just sits there doing nothing. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll try them out. tex
winxp's firewall is on by default. I'd turn it off and try to access your yahoo account again.
halter91
Did you load all the service packs? If so some might effect your software. You should be able to access all the mail. I would try the updates 1st. Is this XP Pro or Home? And yes, you can load XP on a partition on your drive. I'm not really sure how to do it, because I always wipe the drive clean 1st.
