WT says Lockett has restructured

I was for cutting Lockett, but if he redid his contract for the minumum plus incentives, I would be in favor of keeping him. Why? Because of what I read in the 2000 Sporting News magazine about him, before he signed with Washington. The Kansas City beat writer wrote:

"Lockett has added muscle and become a key component in the third-down offense, displaying the courage to go over the middle and make difficult catches in traffic. Of his 34 receptions last year [1999], 24 produced first downs."

So he didnt look great with us last year, but thats understandable with the QB's we had and the offensive coordinator. If he's used properly -- like on third downs, or in given situations -- he could be a valuable receiver. SS seems to see something in him, because he expressed publicly that he was glad Houston didnt select him in the expansion draft.

Good! I like lockett.

I like that way that he finds seams and gets open, especially on the obvious passing downs when the defense knows what's coming. I like his separation and the lanes he creates for his QB.

He may not be a star, but he's definitely a solid addition to any WR corps.

And I wonder if we're starting to find ourselves set at WR: Gardner, Locket, Anthony, McCants, Thompson, Skaggs. Perhaps a draftee to add to the mix (although I wonder about that), perhaps one more FA.

This is likely the best of all possible results, b/c Lockett made some difficult, in-traffic catches last year. He's also more quick than fast, which I think actually benefits Spurrier's system. Again, a smart, patient move by the team.
I think.

I never understood why were cutting him in the first place. He was our most clutch receiver last year for converting third and longs, if you go back and watch the tapes.

I know you've heard this a million times but my brother lives in KC and is a hardcore Chiefs fan. He and the other fans I spoke to had nothing but fantastic things to say about him last year when we signed him. They were really sad that the Chiefs could not afford to keep him. I'm not too sure how much of that praise was due to the fact he was a K State player, so I tempered the opinion a little.

Kevin's younger brother is sure to go fairly high in this draft. He's pure speed and I always thought that Spurrier would be a little intrigued with is skills. Additionally, and I'm not exactly certain about this, but I'm pretty sure that K State runs a Spurrier-esque offense, so both Lockett's would probably fit in very well to his system.

[ March 15, 2002, 10:38 AM: Message edited by: The Dark Horse ]

I'm with the Dark Horse . . . Lockett made cluth grabs most of the season, bailed us out more than a few times on third downs, and didn't drop the ball nearly as often as Rod. Not that Rod won't be getting better and better, but Lockett is still young, and the fact that he restructured shows he's both a team guy and wants to play for SS. As for his brother Aaron, I read somewhere he's only expected to be a return man in the pros. I think we're just about full up at WR, though a gem in the draft wouldn't shock me.

Yea, his situation was a suprise. The lad actually did show some game this past season. Despite who the O.C. was and who the Skins Q.B was. I wonder if this could be a prelude to more restructuring in the near future. You would think Spurrier would like to have the bulk of his offensive players signed on before the first minicamp. The same for Lewis.

[ March 15, 2002, 11:39 AM: Message edited by: Park City Skins ]

sorry, guys you will have to refresh my memory on the big plays of Mr. Lockett from the 2001 season.

As I remember he made one 34 yard catch in one game that helped finish off a drive, but other than that everything else was of the 8 yards on third and 10 variety

Lockett is not a lock to make this team even with the restructuring.

He is going to be pressed with the younger, taller and faster receivers we already have along with whatever Steve finds in the draft.

So, just because Spurrier wants to look at him in minicamp doesn't mean he will be around on opening day.

BD, might I suggest re-reading the posts here. Nobody has said Lockett made "big" plays, although I do take you to Inmates post about 24 first down catches. Those could be defined as big plays, you know, keeping the drive alive? He also had a 13.3 yd per catch average. That should address the 8 yd. variety on 3rd and 10 subject.

As a few of us have said already, if your going to judge a reciever on this team on last seasons performance, one had better keep a close eye on who was running it. On the field and off. Many of us have commented on the fact that Banks didn't spend a whole lot of time looking at any other receiver other than Gardner on the field.

It can be said that just about "anyone" that Spurrier has invited to the mini-camp may won't be around on opening day. S.S. has all but said this. He even told his coaching staff to be prepared to cut some Gators. Let's look at the positive, there could be a good reason why Lockett was resigned. S.S. likes what he saw on tape and would like to take a closer look. .

[ March 15, 2002, 12:16 PM: Message edited by: Park City Skins ]

I stand corrected. Lockett was not the most consistant when I checked. But it's a close call.

Let's just look at 3rd down and 6 or longer last season.

Lockett had 7 receptions for an average of 13.0 yards.

Gardner had 9 receptions for an average of 11.0 yards.

Westbrook had 9 receptions for an average of 17.9 yards.

Westbrook's stats are a little inflated because 1 of the 9 receptions was for 76 yards, while Locket's longest reception on third and long was 22 yards and Gardner's longest reception on third and long was 16 yards.

I'd say for the buck, it is safe to say Lockett can be a very effective third receiver when you compare him situationally to the 'starters'.

No one here is saying he is a superstar but he is just as good as getting a Ricky Proel for a good price.

Lockett has the ability to find the seam of the zone and sit there waiting for the catch. This is a key component of the Fun and Gun. on the other hand, this is also the Forte of Chris Doering, the wideout from fla that Spurrier already signed. So, it could be redundant and, as much as I like Lockett, he may not be with us for long.

Either way, whoever wins that 3rd WR slot will have earned it against solid competition, and so the squad is stengthened overall.

One thing about Lockett, he was by far more productive in the 4th quarter than any other time of the game, grabbing 169 of his 229 total yds then, and boosting his reception average to 16.9 yds in that qtr.

Lockett was an excellent slot receiver for us. He was a highly efficient specialist. Problem is what he is paid to be a specialist may be too much. We also didn't see him run alert patterns (strange but Raye's O did not run this pattern which is integral in running the Texas play).

I do imagine the slot receiver in the Pro version of the FNG will catch a lot of passes (esp. in the 2 and 3 quarters since that will probably be when he gets mis-matches).
