Oldskool
Even though NES and then PS came out soon afterwards, the Sega Genesis system was a revolutionary step ahead of all others for when it came out. I was totally in love with playing “Altered Beast” when It came out.
JeffSchmeff
I owned a 2600, and while Pitfall has a special place in my heart, the NES is where it's at. It was way ahead of it's time. I still remember playing it the first day I got it. I got Super Mario Bros and Ikari Warriors. Plus, what game could top Tecmo Bowl in it's day? DUSTINMFOX
Your right nothing could top Tecmo Bowl in it's day...Raiders were kick ass in that game with Bo and Allen......I remember you could block the kicks with LT.....the skins playbook sucked (wasted play w/ the reverse)
jaxskins
N64 takes my vote. They brought 3D to the gaming platform and had some of the best games out there that to me are stil some of the best I ever payed. Canyonero!
Just to be clear, the poll asked for "The best video game console for it's time?" There are some on this poll that don't even deserve to be. Even though the Odyssey was the first home video game, the thing never lived up to what Magnavox hoped for. Atari came by a couple years later and basically destroyed the thing. Are we supposed to include the Telstar in the Colecovision group? In any case, the VCS came out the following year and the Telstar was never heard from again. I don't know how the Intellivision was a better console than the 2600. It had better graphics, but it cost more for consumers. There have been tons of Gameboy competitors that have had better graphics, but I don't think any of us can say they were better systems. Anyway, the real decision for me comes down to NES vs. SNES. Yes, the NES was leaps and bounds ahead of the 5200, but by the time we got it in 1985, the Master System was already coming out. And while the Master System basically got shafted here in the US, the system had some amazing games. And while we all rooted for one or the other during the SNES vs. Genesis days, it's hard to argue that the SNES wasn't the better system. Just go back and look at the lineup of games during the early 90's. Especially Nintendo's exclusives (like all the SquareSoft games). The NES was great. But Nintendo took that greatness and perfected it with the SNES. Even today, the best controller ever is that 6 button classic. The only thing better was the top loading NES
kappaluvacee
I would have said the NES, but I remember what the Genesis did to the NES, then it ruled until the playstation came out nearly six years later.

Sweet Sassy Molassy
My votes went to: XBOX, Dreamcast(Sega was way ahead of it's time), Sega Saturn(Again way way ahead of it's time), PlayStation(Sony made advanced graphics gaming bigtime), Super NES, and Other (remember NeoGeo?). Also, did you know that Nintendo's game system real name, what we call (NES or Nintendo), was Famicon? Edit: Sorry it's spelled Famicom
dahogs
Intellivision was the first "premium" game system, and in my opinion showed that there was better things than the Atari 2600 in store for the future. Not to mention, with George Plimpton as its pitchman, it was really the first game machine geared to adults, as well as kids.
Mr. S
definitely SNES, it came and lasted pretty well, even when Playstation had come out. Id go with Playstation next, but I think about SNES, it beat out Genesis and Sega CD, as well as all these other upgrades Sega tried to introduce like 32x. JeffSchmeff
I am ashamed to have never owned an SNES. It's basically the only console I never owned though (outside of some of the quirky ones). The reason I stuck with my Genesis was because sports games played faster on it. There was no contest between Madden for Genesis and Madden for SNES. The players moved slower on the SNES. :2cents:

Renegade7
When the original Playstation came out, I don't remember anything even close to its standards. Not even the Sega Saturn. Shoot, if you ask me, we wouldn't have the X-box or Gamecube or even the PS2 if it weren't for Sony. Gotta love Japan.
panel
Nothing was cooler that when 64 came out, it was sold out everywhere, and people were selling them on the black market for up to $800. Before this, it was Super Nintendo, that was the best thing, Super Nintendo to 64 was a HUGE leap. PS2 was hot too, in 11th grade, my classes were slightly less full one day because people camped out in front of best buy the day it came out, and Madden 2001, compared to Madden 2000 was HUGE in the improvement. I don't think the difference between ps2 and ps3 will be anything close to the difference between Super Nintendo and 64, or 64 to PS2.

The only thing better was the top loading NES I actually still have my SNES, and have it here in my dorm. Surprising I play it a lot. Me and my freinds just can't get enough of the classic NBA Jam TE game. Even though the graphics are bad, it is still more fun to play than most of the games that are out right now. SKINZ_DOMIN8
Sega Genesis and here's why........ It easily had the BEST football games Madden and Bill Walsh College Football which is still awesome. I don't like today's versions of football games because they have lost the "arcade" feel to them. They tried to make the football games too real and I think that is a mistake. This is the reason I loved Tecmo bowl too ..........It was fun to play and score 42 points almost every time you played. Does anyone else agree?
