2002 Draft

I just don't see that happening. It's obvious that we need DL, and I think at that position....or even a bit further down....we'll get a good player. I can't see us deviating much from this unless someone like Williams (S) from Olklahoma should happen to be there. He could be an impact player.

Henderson is certainly going to be a good one, and whomever gets him will be getting a rising star. LB just isn't a need for us so I can see us passing on him. What might happen, however, is someone really jonesing for him that might want to trade up to get him. Maybe we could pick up a one later in the first and maybe a third rounder in order to oblige someone.

It's definitely going to be an interesting draft.

Speaking of the draft:

Did anyone else watch Tank Williams the saftey from Stanford the other day? He was near the ball or making the tackle on just about every play. It was the first time I've watched Stanford all year but I was impressed with him.

Don't think he's much of a coverage guy though. He's 6'3" 215 and runs a 4.7 40.

If nothing else we should draft him for his name alone smile.gif

I was thinking we should draft Chet Clusterfuuck. He runs a 4.1 40 and is 8 feet tall.

Chet has an extra knee that he won in the Punt, pass and kick contest back during the 84 bounce-off as a child.

It is entirely possible that Marty could select Henderson as a MLB and look to fill his DT hole with a free agent veteran. Don't discount the fact that Marty is an old linebacker and looks at the position as being the key to the defense.

Remember another guy that had a fondness for linebackers, Bill Parcells, convinced George Young to take Carl Banks at #5 in the 1984 draft even though the team had already drafted Lawrence Taylor #1 in 1981 and had veterans Harry Carson and Gary Reasons on board. Everyone thought the Giants were going to draft a DT or OL that year. smile.gif

I could see a scenario where the Redskins either draft a MLB or try to acquire a franchise player like Jeremiah Trotter in free agency as the key offseason move.

Trotter is going to become a UFA and I don't see the Eagles with their ownership paying him market price when Reid believes he has a replacement in Gardner waiting in the wings.

all hinges on FA. if we rope in a guy like parella to play DT, then our options widen significantly. if we go defense, i'ld like see us draft a true pass rushing de in the first round. however, an lb who can pass cover (i.e., a speed guy) but bring size and punch to run defense to complement lavar (barber doesn't have the whle package - a bit undersized) would be nice, but a lesser priority than a killer sfatey (terrel advocates notwithstanding!). while i ultimately think we need to draft a quality QB, i think marty is going to stick with banks on the theory that he can coach him to greatness (or at least competence).

this theme is going to be beat to death over the next several months - but it does tweak one's interest!

If Wendell Bryant falls, you take him but odds are he won't. David Carr WILL still be on the board but I'm against taking him. I'd much rather have a defensive lineman be it a DE or DT.

Houston will take either Peppers or McKinnie with the first pick and I'd be extremely surprised if they took anyone else.

Is it that hard to find some guys on the second day of the draft that can contribute their rookie year? I think that Smoot and Gardner are both good picks, but beyond that I didnt see much this year. I was expecting to see the WR we picked up in the 4th or 5th to play some. We cut the DT we picked up in th 6th so I knew that wasn't an option. I know that good GM's can find talent like that. I dont think that Marty has taht talent and we are going to waste those picks again next year (so why not just trade them like Bethard would?)

I would take a QB in the 2nd round if we can get high enough IN that round to get a Harrington, Kittner or Carr. 2002 is not the year of the QB so we can afford to wait alittle I believe.
