inmate running the asylum
Cards set up visits with 7 players Kent Somers The Arizona Republic Mar. 4, 2004 12:00 AM While a handful of teams plunged into the NFL free-agent market Wednesday, the Cardinals were more cautious, scheduling visits with several players, but in no rush to make a splash. Seven players are scheduled to visit the Cardinals before the end of the week. And although Rod Graves, vice president for football operations, said no significance should be attached to who visits first, all seven play positions of great need. Included are three defensive ends, one offensive guard, a cornerback, a return specialist and a backup quarterback. Graves is having personnel discussions on other fronts, too. He didn't deny he has had discussions with the Vikings about trading for receiver Randy Moss. It's a long shot the deal would ever be made, and the Vikings have denied they are trying to trade Moss. When asked if had talked to the Vikings about Moss, Graves replied: "Not today." When asked again, Graves said: "At this point, that's mostly rumor." In addition, Graves denied reports that the team is interested in quarterback Jeff Garcia, released Tuesday by San Francisco. Graves declined to say why, other than coach Dennis Green decided he didn't want to pursue Garcia. While most NFL teams entered free agency slowly, a few teams moved quickly. "There is always a handful of teams out there that are in a position where they feel they have to get something done very quickly," Graves said. "And I think those teams obviously take risks in doing so. What we want to do is manage our situation where we feel like we're getting good value for the players. We're concerned about excessively overpaying guys beyond what their abilities are worth." The Cardinals have several more free-agent visits scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, before Graves and several of the coaches leave to attend workouts on college campuses. Today's visitors: Eric Hicks, DE, Kansas City; David Macklin, CB, Indianapolis. Friday: Bert Berry, DE, Denver; Mike Goff, G/C, Cincinnati; Reggie Swinton, WR/KR/PR, Detroit. Saturday: Grant Wistrom, DE, St. Louis; Shaun King, QB, Tampa Bay.
Jimbo
From that entire list, the only guy I really want is Berry.
