Art
We now have Portis and Springs. We could have had Bailey and, say, Staley instead. In the balance, what do you think's better? I'll even throw in Bailey and Dillon as an option, though I will mock those who pick this option because we all know Dillon was NEVER going to play for Gibbs. Essentially, which pairing makes us a better team.
The X-Factor
If Springs stays healthy, there is no question the tandem we now have would be better than any of the other ones mentioned.
qb18_200400
Stayley? He sucks! Bailey and dillion would've been nice to have. But you gotta go with what we have! It would've been better, Portis and Winfield.
Streater101
Portis and Springs easily
Henry
Shouldn't it be Bailey, Staley and whoever we'd get in the second round?
pr11fan
Portis and Springs although Winfield would've been even better imo. Champ simply didn't have the desire to be here anymore and when a player has that attitude it's better to cut your losses.
unsonny
cant wait to see what Duce goes for in the market. and how Jones does after he's drafted after our 5th pick!! could be the Jordan draft all over!!!! couldve shouldve wouldve DIDNT!!!! TK
Portis alone makes the team better.
DJCrash34
I would take Portis and Springs over Bailey and Staley anyday. The dropoff between bailey and springs is miniscule compared to the dropoff between Portis and Staley

As you have no way to know who it'll be you can't really factor it in. If, though, you deem it something that's necessary, you certainly can. The Sisko
As much as I would have liked to have kept Bailey and our #2, he isn't worth the contract Denver gave him. The fact that Portis is a game breaker tips things his way, but the cap savings seals the deal for me.
bulldog
of course there is that little matter of the #2 pick we threw in however, on the basis of your 'trade' straight up, I will take Portis and Springs. Portis is far superior to Staley, younger, faster, healthier. Bailey is a better cover corner than Springs. But Springs and Smoot together still give the Redskins a very solid duo at CB, one that is competitive with many of the teams that made the postseason in 2003. Perhaps the overriding factor in my NOT choosing Bailey and Staley is the gut feeling which I think has been borne out that Champ didn't want to remain a Redskin and even if we ponied up the extra cash to make him a $20 million offer, he would not be as upbeat and positive for Gibbs coming into minicamps as Springs will be
NavyDave
Bailey and Duce. We'd still have our second rounder which isnt a bust sans the gatorade years and the jury is still out and the second rounder could've been TE B Watson or center J Grove. Heck if we waited we could ve grab brunnel with no compensation or the metrosexual from frisco keeping our 3rd
wwninja420
If Springs has a decent year then its better. Portis gives us instant offense. Play action pass will be worked this year, and you can quote me on that.
qb18_200400
Duce? Why consider that even. he had a couple good years got hurt, a decent year got hurt. then got beat out by two guys from no where. Duce sucks. I hope dallas gets him.
citigent
portis and springs because portis is by far better then any other rb, while bailey better then springs, springs will be good enough if he stays heatlhy.
a_good_brotha
Portis and Springs by far. Waaah , waaah, waaah, we lost Champ. Do you that means? Basically, it means Amani Toomer now needs to work for his TD receptions.
ummagumma
To be accurate you should mention the 2nd...afterall, you called it a trade. The 41st pick in ANY NFL draft is nothing to sneeze at.
Art
Umma, To be accurate you compare the players you received for the players you surrendered. We don't know whether we'd have gotten Staley or Dillon so ALREADY it's a difficult deal to address. To be REALLY accurate, I'd have to ask Portis and Springs versus Bailey and the No. 2. But, that would be a lopsided poll and what fun are those?
Touchdown Portis!
Portis is SICK and I love that dude, but as far as an overall pairing, Shawn Springs does not even come close to Roland, so if Roland wasn't such a **** and we would actually want Corey Dillon in Burgundy and Gold, then the Baily/Dillon combo is the best. Unless we get Sean Taylor and some good pressure on the QB, I am not confident in Springs, hopefully I'm wrong though.
WallyG3
You know, a Raider friend of mine called me tonight to talk football. He thinks we made out like bandits in this whole thing. He thinks Springs is better than Champ to begin with. He also said we basically swapped Champ for Springs, gained Portis, and lost a 2nd round draft pick. So, we got Portis for a 2nd rounder. Not too shabby. Nice to see an outsider's perspective.
Hogwash
I'm still fumed about having to give up a 2nd Rounder! The fact that we have Springs is news to me, redskins.com doesn't tell you jack sh!t anymore. If not for this site, i wouldn't know that we had Portis either. But Redskins.com talks about some worthless D-Lineman we signed tho.
kappaluvacee
I'll take Clinton and Springs. I can't wait for mini camps to begin
fansince62
as many are wont to say....waaaay to early to tell. if Springs lands up being an injury prone non-entity this is barely a break even deal: it will force us to expend capital yet again on rectifiing the defense. I remember the pre-Champ days vividly - pass defense was a major league headache. if Springs actually lasts a whole season and if he is able to make a mark against the top receivers in our division (don't forget that the other teams aren't standing still, our moves have to be viewed in light of what iggles/pukes, etc. are doing) then this is a good deal (assumiong also that Portis is an every down back who can survive a 400-450 carry season.
