rob
If I remember correctly, a prototypical Joe Gibbs offense features TE/HBs. What are bets for a pickup here?
The X-Factor
Hopefully Erron Kinney. He doesn't have the great hands, but is a good blocker. I don't think it would be wise to spend $3 mil/yr on Kleinsasser, when he really isn't a threat catching the ball.
rhyno
they are giving Chamberlain a chance to get in shape. Sellers will be a good option as well. Hopefully we will lock up Kleinsasser. That sounds pretty god to me..
The X-Factor
If we still had our 2nd round pick, Ben Watson out of Georgia would have also been a great pick.
Renegade7
Kleinsasser will start. Even if he doesn't have great hands, its the blocking that he's known for, and that's what Gibbs wants primeraly in a TE. I hope we get Kinney as well. He can block pretty well too. http://nfl.com/players/playerpage/187582 http://nfl.com/players/playerpage/133340 ----------------------------- 0-16, 19-0, skins fan till i die!!! panel
Yeah, I think it will be Chamberland and Sellers as rhyno suggested.
rob
I have to admit I like a Clint Didier type, and it's not just because I graduated from Portland State. I'm betting G & B will find/develop a low cost starter. Who's the best available/affordable? 82 Chamberlain, Byron TE 250 6'1 33 9 yrs Wayne State 88 Royal, Robert TE 257 6'4 25 2 yrs Louisiana State Stephens, Leonard TE 253 6'3 26 2 yrs Howard 48 Ware, Kevin TE 259 6'3 24 1 yrs Washington BUZZ Vikings, Kleinsasser talking: The Vikings talked Thursday to the agent of free-agent tight end Jim Kleinsasser and hope to complete a long-term deal before the signing period begins on Wednesday. If a deal isn't agreed upon by Tuesday night, Kleinsasser could sign elsewhere. There are strong indications Washington could arrange a visit with him as soon as Wednesday, and Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder is known for signing free agents during their visits. The Vikings and Kleinsasser have swapped contract proposals and aren't close to an agreement. It's believed Kleinsasser is looking for a contract that will pay him up to $3 million a year. "I had a good dialogue with the Vikings," his agent, Jimmy Sexton, said. "We're continuing to talk in hopes of getting a deal done." FREE AGENTS TIGHT ENDS (in alphabetical order by free agent type): FA 2003 2004 Player Name Status Team Status ----------- ------ ---- ------ Fred Baxter (UFA) NE Cameron Cleeland (UFA) SL Matt Cushing (UFA) PIT John Davis (UFA) CHI Jason Dunn (UFA) KC Patrick Hape (UFA) DEN John Jones (UFA) BAL Erron Kinney (UFA) TEN Jim Kleinsasser (UFA) MIN Brian Kozloski (UFA) ATL Kris Mangum (UFA) CAR Walter Rasby (UFA) NO O.J. The Lions have a lot of holes to fill, and taking the best available player at this point makes a lot of sense. A back like Jackson is possible here, as well, but as I mentioned above, I'm not sure he's worth this high of a selection, and Matt Millen can't afford to strike out on this draft pick. Ben Troupe TE Florida After Willie Middlebrooks' failed experiment and the move of Deltha O'Neal to wideout, the Broncos are desperate for cornerback help. However, with it looking more and more like Shannon Sharpe has played his final snap in the NFL, Troupe would be a great late first-round value and fill another glaring need. seanskins
Sellers is a big boy, he played in the cfl for while and i saw him play, HUGE, and he can block! If need be, he can run too!
3DaysLatr
If we can get Bruener (released by Pitt for cap reasons) for a low cap number than I say that's the way to go. We may be able to sign an undrafted FA TE with blocking skills but weak hands or downfield ability. That gives us a solid blocking veteran TE and a raw blocking TE to understudy with. This is only possible if Bruener's $ demands are low though.
BG
Sellers has already had a chance to prove himself here. Nothin special there. He is a solid reliable backup. I myslef can see the reason in spending a large amount of worth ona TE i.e: Watson, Kleinsasser, Troupe. Winslow I can see because he has uncanny skills that TE's don't normally have. I think Royal with cheese can pullit off. Chamberlain if he busts a*s in the offseason maybe. We should make due with those guys and maybe a smaller, faster hands guy that can play HB too...... rob
If the Skins are looking for the best player/addition available, KW may not be the best, but you have to wonder what he'd cost.
miragv
i think we might be fine with chamberlain, he should be able to get in shape. i think we need to remember that we have an excellent coaching staff and they will get all they can out of our existing players
Makaveli
Winslow anyone?
Montilar
Winslow anyone? ah, no. Miami had their pro workouts today. "Winslow (6-3 7/8, 247 pounds) was actually four pounds less here than at the combine. He lifted the bar 24 times and ran for an average of 4.52 seconds. " So Watson is slightly bigger, just as fast, and lifted the bar 34 times. And cheaper if we absolutely must draft a TE. Not to mention Troupe is out there as well. Sweet Sassy Molassy
Well if I had to say who I'd want, I would go for Kleinsasser. But I also noticed that Bob Kozlowski (Falcons) is a UFA, I've always known him to be a solid all around player, good blocker, good hands, etc.. What do you guys think about him, he'd also be cheap. Bang
Move Bryan Johnson to H- Back / TE, use him and Sellers and hopefully Kinney? I'd forget Kleinsasser unless we REALLY suck up to Jimmy Sexton. ~Bang
Mr. S
Just wondering, where is Mike Sellars from, he wasnt on the team last year I dont think. The name does sound familiar though. Give Chamberlain a chance. Kevin Ware hasnt proven well, but Robert Royal should be given a chance. Those should be the 3.
RedskinPride27
Mike Sellers played in the CFL and was from Walla Walla JC I think before the Skins gave him a shot in 98. I remember he was a big guy, very athletic with some skills. Then we cut him and he went to the Browns and got in trouble with the law and got cut again. I wouldnt mind going the cheaper route and get Bruener or Kinney. Pass on Kleinsasser. And me too, I'd like to see Chamberlain bust his butt and play well in training camp and earn a spot. inmate running the asylum
A 4.52 forty for Kellen Winslow who is a 247 lb. tight end is blazing for a tight end or anyone who carries that much weight. I doubt if Jeremy Shockey even runs that fast.
inmate running the asylum
Joe Gibbs will carry four TE's on the roster like he always did, but they will be of the mix-and-match variety for different game situations. Two may very well be TE's who are big in-line blockers and two may very well be of the smaller H-back type, that shift around in the backfield. If they are good special teams players, that enhances their chances of making the team. If that is the case I would project. TE - (in-line blockers): Jim Kleinsasser or Erron Kinney Byron Chamberlain - if he gets in shape, a good pass receiver in the red zone. Robert Royal? Kevin Ware? H-back types: Mike Sellers - very good blocker, good pass receiver and special teamer. Rock Cartwright - versatile, short, but good pass receiver, used to shifting around in the backfield.
