inmate running the asylum
Clinton Portis has the potential to be a great HOF back and for you guys worrying about his lack of size.............. don't. For I just did some checking and he is as big or bigger than Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders and Tony Dorsett. All those guys were relatively small guys, but heavy duty backs and were even about 5 lbs. lighter when they first came into the leaque then when they finished. Portis has only started 25 games and has rushed for over 100 yards in 18 of them, including two 200 yard games. He is the type of player that DC's have to game plan on how to stop, and most of the time they haven't been successful at it. So I am happy as a pig in slop with this trade. Clinton Portis 5-11 205 Emmitt Smith 5-10 209 Barry Sanders 5-8 203 Tony Dorsett 5-11 184 Clinton Portis: Year | G-GS | Att Yards LG Y/A TD 100-YG | 2002 | 16-12 | 273 1508 59 5.5 15 8* | 2003 | 13-13 | 290 1591 65 5.5 14 10* | Totals| 29-25 | 563 3099 65 5.5 29 18 | *2002 - Rushed for 228 yds vs. Arizona *2003 - Rushed for 218 yds vs. Kansas City
Jay Master Jay
I like Clinton I even voted for him. He can help us immediately and he's a playmaker. He has been injured a miss a few games. This is the NFC East can he take the pounding and hold on to the ball? This is the most physical division in the NFL and you have to make the tough yards. WE need to rough run can we with him?:hammer:

Jay Master Jay
Those are HOF and he's not their yet. I would love to see Portis keep it going and get 1800 yards next year. We could end up in the SB.
Jay Master Jay
Another word of note about Portis. E James came out of UM and had 2 great years in Indy. He got hurt and is trying to regain that form again. Portis has already miss some games.
feeshta
Barry Sanders 5-8 203 I think 150lbs of that weight was in his legs!! LOL Nobody had tree-trunks like Barry. But I think you are right about Portis' potential. He has the speed and elusiveness to be on of the best, and he is not afraid to take the hit when he needs to. That's true about Barry, but the biggest tree trunk legs ever belonged to a back that played for the Pukes back in the 70's. I think his name was Newhouse? His legs were so big it was just funny looking.

Let's hope Portis isn't subject to a similar fate
KDawg
You know what I like most about Portis? It's the fact that now Rock will almost certainly be the change of pace back and actually see some playing time... I'm not sure if we'll even see Betts or Canidate unless injuries occur... Obviously this is speculation, but speculation that I like... Portis/Cartwright... fear them

All of those were last year, he came back for the playoffs and still in 13 games in the regular season had 290 carries. He can handle it, i'm sure of it. No doubt in my mind he can be a HOF at this rate. I'm not the only one who thinks that too. ------------------------------------------- 0-16, 19-0, skins fan till i die!!! NavyDave
I'm not sold on him yet. Why? Because he hasnt done jack sh!t for the skins. Dorset played when linemen werent as huge and fast as they are now and he had a knack for avoid the full brunt of a hit. Portis has laready missed games and Denver didnt blink at kicking him to the curb. Champ misfortune is that he isnt an UFA from another team. We are getting robbed in this trade but once again the flash/offensive splash is blinding others again
Drex
If you take a closer look at some of Portis' stats through his two years in the league, you will notice that he runs alot tougher than his actual size. Here are his career stats broken down according to the particular months of the season: September 81 495 70.7 6.1 3 October 164 749 93.6 4.6 5 November 154 826 118.0 5.4 6 December 164 1029 147.0 6.3 15 It's quite interesting that he carried for the most yards, a higher average and substantially more TD's in the month of December, the month associated with weather of this division's stretch run. Some more stats to chew on: This is a breakdown of the type of runs he's had in regards to the position on the field. Wide Right 55 396 7.2 1 Right 171 839 4.9 8 Middle 137 827 6.0 11 Left 142 718 5.1 8 Wide Left 58 319 5.5 1 As you can see, he has had more TD runs up the middle(11) than anywhere else. More than half of his career rushing yards have come either in the middle or to the left or right(2,384), dispelling the notion that he is just a pure perimeter runner, although possessing the ability to do so Bottomline: Portis runs much tougher than his size indicates. How dare we trade away "King (I don't want to be here) Bailey" for a young 22 year old running back phenom. I mean....who does Joe Gibbs think he is coming in here and blowing up this great team that the redskins have had since he left. Wow....how could we give up on a LOCK DOWN:paranoid: corner like "Champion" Bailey? After all....look at how many pro bowls he's gone to.. I really wish that some of those pro bowls added up to playoff wins...But who cares? Bailey was and is the man....Now he's going to go to Denver and catch 55 ints and 300 tackles next year and catch 30 touchdown passes on offence and while we are at it....he's gonna take the broncos back to glory...because they will just plug in some pee-wee league running back in there and he'll have 3,000 yds in 5 games......and what will we have....just another everyday, average, run of the mill, tailback that will give us a 1,500+ yard rusher and our first appearance in the playoffs in a long time...but soooooooo what....I like the redskins the way they were....with champ bailey.......(Nobodys)......and then......and then......and then....... kappaluvacee
It's way too early to mention Portis and HOF in the same sentence. The man only has two seasons under his belt. RB is a position where your career could be ended with one hit. He has the potential to be a great back, but doesn't betts and cartright have a lot of potential as well. Think about this for a second. Portis has been killing you all game, then with 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter Gibbs keeps shoving a down-hill back named Betts down your throat until his first posession in the fourth. Once the 4th quarter starts he puts rested Portis back into the game run past your worn down D-Line. Don't think too hard folks, that's exactly what you are going to see next year. Anybody remember Byner/Ervins...That's exactly what he used to do with those two. Betts is the Rb that's going to gain the most from RB Coach Byner. Portis will learn a lot too. I can't wait for the season to start

The other backs mentioned were pretty recent. Portis is only 22, he still has some filling in to do. Everyone gains muscle as they go along in their career, in bball and in football. Originally posted by NavyDave Champ misfortune is that he isnt an UFA from another team. We are getting robbed in this trade but once again the flash/offensive splash is blinding others again So you're implying that Snyder would be paying the big bucks for Roland if he were from somewhere else? Roland wants way, way too much money. I'm a fan of him and all, but man, that's a lot of money. I'm not sure how Denver can afford him. Originally posted by NavyDave We are getting robbed in this trade but once again the flash/offensive splash is blinding others again This is obviously a Gibbs move, so he's getting blinded by offensive splash? Then the game really has passed him by hasn't it? Nonsense. It's really not that complicated - check out the RBs on our godamn roster. Trash for starters. Cartwright and Betts are backups at best. If you're concerned at all about Portis's durability, then you should want Betts to be cut. How is this a robbing? Champ's going to be gone one way or another. Again, if you doubt this, look how much money he is getting from Denver. Denver already has a solid team and needs help in other areas, while we need help in lots of areas and can't afford to pay the soon-to-be highest paid cornerback in the league. And he obviously wasn't going to take a paycut to remain with us.
Skins26
The first time I really watched him was this past season during a preseason game. And I was amazed at the way he ran. He really impressed me that game with how tough he ran. It seemed like anytime there isnt really anything there he puts his head down and just drives his legs as hard as he can, usually picking up an extra 4-5 yards every time. Then I thought there was no way we could get him. But now we can.

sashae
RBs have a much larger effect on a team than CBs do... who would you rather have in their prime, Deion Sanders or Barry Sanders? If we were trading away... say, Reggie White in his prime for Clinton Portis, I'd be totally against it. DL have a huge effect on a team, CBs do not. -s
