By Monday, chances are good that Champ Bailey and the Denver Broncos will have a deal completed that will make Bailey a Bronco and send running back Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins.

A league source said last night that the financial framework of the contract between Bailey and the Broncos had been agreed upon. All that remained was working through the complicated language of a long-term contract so it meets the guidelines of the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA, the players' union.

That is expected to be completed over the weekend. The contract then has to go to the league office for final approval.

Bailey, a cornerback, was set to become a free agent Wednesday. But the Redskins put their franchise tag on Bailey and entertained trade overtures. The Broncos offered Portis, who gained 1,591 yards last season, and asked for the Redskins' second-round draft choice this spring in addition to Bailey.

The Redskins have agreed to those terms, pending Bailey's successful contract negotiations with the Broncos. Portis has two years remaining on his current contract and while the Redskins probably will renegotiate his deal, that is not necessary to complete the trade.

The trade will not be official until the NFL's trading period opens March 3.
