Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The trade for WR Joey Galloway began to take shape Thursday when the team opened contract talks with the nine-year veteran. "We had a first discussion and exchanged some ideas,'' agent Leigh Steinberg told the Tampa Tribune. "We discussed some initial concepts, and we're going to talk again [today] probably.'' To make the deal work, however, the Bucs and Cowboys must first restructure the contracts of the players they would receive so their salaries will fit under the NFL's 2004 cap figure of $80.6 million. Johnson's agent refused to comment Thursday on the status of negotiations between he and the Cowboys. He has been talking with Cowboys officials since Tuesday, however, and is believed to be making progress.

New England Patriots: The club is speaking with CB Ty Law about restructuring his existing deal which counts more than $10 million towards the 2004 cap, but so far all they've done is anger the Pro Bowler. The team's first proposal to Law was a four-year, $26 million extension that includes $6.6 million up front -- an offer Law considers to be an insult. "I felt like it was a slap in the face," Law told the Boston Globe. "It was an insult. I didn't appreciate it at all. I thought, `Man, we've got a long way to go if that's the starting off point.' I was thinking of putting a `for sale' sign in front of my house ...I couldn't believe it. I was speechless. It was disappointing more than anything. It kind of hurt."

New Orleans Saints: RB Deuce McAllister was involved in an altercation at a Bourbon Street bar on Fat Tuesday, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. No one was arrested and the NOPD is investigating the incident. "We are trying to find out what actually happened," said New Orleans police spokesman Paul Accardo. The Saints haven't done their own investigation but they have spoken to McAllister and are backing their star back. "From what we understand, Deuce was trying to mediate the situation and ended up being a victim," GM Mickey Loomis said. "We are 100 percent in his corner."

Pittsburgh Steelers: The club made offers to all six of its restricted free agents Thursday. Each of the six players -- C Chukky Okobi, G Keydrick Vincent, DE Rodney Bailey, OT Mathias Nkwenti, DT Chris Hoke and CB Chidi Iwuomar -- received the same one-year tender of $628,000 according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That tender is the minimum offer a team can make in order to maintain the rights to their restricted free agents. The Steelers now retain the right to match a contract the players might sign with another team. If the Steelers decline to match such an offer, they would receive a 2004 draft pick in the same round in which the player was chosen. Okobi would bring a fifth-round pick, Bailey a sixth-rounder and Nkwenti a fourth-rounder. Vincent, Hoke and Iwuoma would not require compensation because they entered the NFL as rookie free agents.

NFL Draft: University of Miami TE Kellen Winslow has yet to choose an agent, but perhaps he doesn't need one. The guaranteed first-round pick has an agent's mentality himself, and charged potential representatives a $2,500 fee just to open discussions with him. Some agents complained to the NFL Players Association and got a quick response. The NFLPA sent out a notice this week advising agents not to pay the fee. "I wouldn't say it is something new, but we haven't heard of a case like this before," NFLPA spokesman Carl Francis told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "It is something we didn't want to become a precedent. This is something we really wanted to address early in the process." Winslow's father said the money will not go in their pockets. Instead, Winslow Sr. said the money is to cover expenses for a three-person advisory board that soon will meet in South Florida with the four agents it selected as finalists to represent Winslow Jr.

Someone was talking smack about the bling bling that Rich Eisen helped him pick out.

If this isn't an early indication of a bad pick, I don't know what is. This is just showing that he'll be a beast to sign. Gurenteed hold out.

What's his need with maybe 25 grand (10 interviews) when he stands to make 10 plus million in a couple of months?

Don't draft him! He's a head case waiting to happen.

This was from Mark Maske's WPost article last Wednesday:

"Don't believe players when they say they aren't worrying about who's going to draft them because they can't control that. When it was mentioned to University of Miami tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. during his media session at the combine that the Detroit Lions perhaps could take him with the fifth overall selection in April, Winslow promptly corrected the inquisitor and said that Detroit picks sixth, not fifth. . . . "

I wouldn't draft that kid if my life depended on it. You'd think someone would counsel him and tell him to be humble and grateful for the opportunity. Instead... he acts like a jerk and charges for Reps. to interview him?

Take Troupe later in Rd 1 or Ben Watson in Rd 2 and be happy you steered clear of that head case.

Of course, if he falls into the late 1st due to his attitude he'd be good value... and there is less chance he can hold out because of his slotted position farther down in Rd. 1.
