Fox: Gibbs on the Portis trade

"When asked if his team was pursuing the trade, Redskins coach Joe Gibbs told The James Brown Show on Sporting News Radio:

"That would be a possibility. But, like I said, that's one that you look at and you try and figure some way of getting it done. We've had three really serious negotiations ongoing and, the problem with this thing is, you can't consummate anything until March 2nd. So, the best way for me to answer that question, and being truthful, is we have a lot of stuff on the table right now and we're trying to figure out what's the best thing to do. That would be something that, obviously, we would seriously look at." "

Broncos blockbuster: Portis trade may be near

Deal for Redskins' Bailey, No. 2 pick close, sources say

INDIANAPOLIS - The Broncos and Washington Redskins are closing in on a blockbuster deal that would send Denver's Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis to Washington for Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey.

In addition to Bailey, Denver is asking for Washington's second-round pick in the April draft, National Football League sources confirmed this weekend.

Until now, the Redskins have balked at surrendering the pick, one reason no agreement has been announced. Yet at least two other sources close to the Redskins say the deal, which would be one of the biggest in football history, is all but done.

The Broncos are trying to first finalize a new contract with Pro Bowl middle linebacker Al Wilson before dealing with the Redskins. The Wilson deal could be completed today.

But if the trade between Denver and Washington were completed, Bailey then would need to be signed as well - likely to a lucrative contrac

To me this is all about getting a trade down put in place where we can recoup the 2nd rounder we'd be giving up in addition to Champ. Once that is in place, I don't think that the organization will think twice about pulling the trigger on this deal. If we can come out of this thing with the same amount of picks as we started before the possible Bailey deal, then its more a case of trading Champ for Portis straight up, while not having to dish out the bonus money you would have to give to the number 5 overall pick.

1) Champ to detroit

2) Brunnell

3) Champ to Denver

1) Champ to whoever

2) Brunnell

Why exactly is this deal one of the biggest in history??? Give me a break! 5 players for Ken Houston was bigger than this. Jurgy for Norm Snead was bigger. All of New Orleans draft picks for Ricky Williams was bigger. We're talking about almost a straight up player for player trade, plus MAYBE a 2nd round pick. And this is somehow huge historically????

Maybe these guys should try some decaf.

So we have 8 days for the deal to hopefully fall thru.

Wow...man what do you have against Portis? The guy is averaging 5.5 yards per carry in his career with already two 1500 + yard seasons under his belt at the age of twenty "freakin" two. It makes great football sense!!!

goodness gracious i hope we do not do this trade!!!!! the best running back in the nfl for the past 5 years has been shannahan, by that i mean that anyone could get 1200+ yards in the broncos run scheme please please let this trade fall through, portis and all broncos backs are the most overrated in the league, surely we could do better than this for bailey this deal is actually causing me pain! for a talented back maybe but not portis and not us giving them a pick!!!!

I think that's exactly right. Champ plus a #2 is too much for Portis. I like somebody's suggestion of Denver throwing in Gardener, but that's only if Gardener agree's to a cap friendly deal.

With Portis gone that makes Trung and Morton expendable IMO. I would use them to "recoup" as you stated. Do we really need them if we keep Betts and Rock. We probably need a fullback.
