It cracks me up that you talk about the payment options....that is the farthest thing from my mind...if I win, I'm stinking rich and never need to work again....hahaha, thanks for looking out for the extra 40 million though!

It's weird, I learned in Finance class in college you always take the lump sum and give yourself the opportunity to make up the difference.....who knows though!

Always take the lump sum. Even a financial neophyte can beat the investment returns that the lottery agencies promise over 26 years.

Plus ... how you gonna buy all the homes, boats, cars, toys -- and of course the grant in perpetuity to Extremeskins -- free and clear if you don't get that big check right up front? :)

By the way ... don't bother to buy tickets.

I already bought the winner.

My office plays. I always call it the stupid person's tax...but I play right along. THere just seems to be something funny about a bunch of statisticians playing the lottery.

We've always said we'd take the lump sum because we all want to be rich NOW. IF we have to parse out the payments between 20 people over time, we'd be comfortable, but...

Okay, jbooma, I have to ask. When I wrote the part about the "grant in perpetuity to Extremeskins" ... did that not qualify? :)

Todd, the odds remain the same. You still have the same number of ping pong balls, and the same number of possible combinations.

What you DO have, though -- due to the higher number of tickets bought when the number gets really high, and people who don't usually buy tickets deciding to give it a shot -- is the decreased chance of being the ONLY winner.

Seems to me every time one of these preposterously big ones is finally won, it ends up being shared by multiple "winners." Which is kind of ironic, when you think about it, because what they end up winning is comparable to the lesser pots available most of the rest of the time.

Not that I think about this stuff much. :)
