Scouting combine is heating up

By Gil Brandt

Special to NFL.com

(Feb. 18, 2004) -- When we arrived in Indianapolis on Tuesday night for the 2004 NFL Combine, the temperature was 37 degrees. By this weekend, it's expected to reach the mid-50s. Yes, the combine is heating up.

NFL Network & Field Pass

NFL Network

Analysis, opinions, features and more!

Super Bowl Field Pass

Super Bowl highlights, Patriots audiocast, and a free game program!

All kidding aside, it's big news compared to last year's combine, when the thermometer was approaching zero and snow ruled the week.

Among the other signs that things are heating up around here: The restaurants all along Illinois Avenue -- St. Elmo's, Ruth's Chris and the rest -- are getting very busy. Between now and the end of the weekend, they will be packed every night with NFL coaches and executives.

The draft prospects who will be streaming in will be busy taking in their first official involvement with the NFL. It all starts Wednesday night, when the first group of players -- offensive linemen and some running backs -- will gather for dinner and orientation. The leader of Group 1, by the way, is former Raiders lineman and current Raiders scout Mickey Marvin. Thursday for these players begins with a 6:30 a.m. wake-up call, and the day will probably end somewhere around 11 at night.

In between, there will be weigh-ins, physical exams, workouts and interviews with individual teams.

FYI: The Dallas Cowboys are a team in need of help at running back. Coincidentally, the first player with whom they are scheduled to meet this week is Ohio State's Maurice Clarett.

Of course, we'll have news from the combine throughout the week, so be sure to check out NFL.com frequently -- and check out our coverage on the NFL Network. In the meantime, here are a few more notes to keep you up to date on what's happening here:

The first player to arrive in Indianapolis this week? Ohio State center Alex Stepanovich.

While most quarterbacks will be working out on Saturday, LSU's Matt Mauck had his workout moved up to Friday. He could have done it Saturday, but that would have interfered with his wedding.

The agent for defensive end Kenechi Udeze called to let us know that the USC star will be working out, and we should expect to see him run a 4.6 40-yard dash.

The father of a prominent ACC player called to thank us for listing his son among our top-ranked offensive prospects. He added that his son, an offensive lineman, will check in this week at 315 pounds, with 10 percent body fat.

Super-agent Drew Rosenhaus called to let us know that we can find him this week down in Room 110 -- the media room at the hotel. Rosenhaus is usually very helpful in getting all his players to run at the combine.

All the combine participants can look forward to receiving "swag" from all the NFL teams, but the big attraction will be the Reebok room. In addition to receiving a bag of stuff from Reebok, players can have a shoe fitting -- trying on an assortment of shoes to see which they like best.

That 4.6 is agent speak. It's probably a 4.69 at best. The agent just left off the last digit for "simplicity's" sake. Even with a 4.60 Udeze probably wouldn't be drafted before the Redskins barring a major trade by a DL needy team. But any trades into the top 3 are probably for one of the QBs or Fitzgerald. The Giants are the iffy pick. I don't know that they can trade down and still guarantee themselves a difference maker on the OL, and of the teams picking in the 6-9 range, none will need a DE badly enough to get in front of the Skins.

In short, the Redskins will have their pick of the best defensive players (Taylor, Udeze, Harris, Smith, or Wilfork) and of course Kellen Winslow if Gibbs goes that route.

I am surprised that people still speculate about who we will take at #5. I think it is very obvious that unless we get a very early round pick for CB, we are trading down from #5 because we have too many needs to fill

Hmmm.... I might just take you up on that bet. New degrading avatar at stake? You in?

I'm not confirming my end of the deal right now... let me stew on it a bit. I just don't happen to think its obvious we're trading down.

Die Hard - I think that we will trade down if we don't get another high pick. If Detroit gives us their #1 for CB, we will still trade down, but we won't trade down both picks.

The redskins have some potential cap issues if they want to be aggressive in FA to sure up the DL. They may cut some LB and Bruce Smith to do so, but if they let Armstead, Trotter or both go, they still need to replace those positions. I think that we would rather pay #5 money on several players from the first couple of rounds than just one player.

I am not looking for any harsh Avatars, but thanks for offering.

The Redskins will be nearly $20 M under after they cut Bruce Smith and renegotiate Chris Samuels. Money isn't the issue.

And I happen to think the Skins will trade down if we DO get another high pick. Not the other way around as you've suggested.

But what do I know... I've lost a similar bet 2 years ago. And Inmate hasn't let me live it down since

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see us get an impact defensive player that is very promising, but I think we have a very talented coaching staff and scout staff that can find gems in later rounds for much more affordable prices.

If we have something like $20M, why are we shopping CB? Also, the only reports I have seen is that Samuels won't renegotiate his contract. I am not sure that the skins can affort to cut him. I don't think he will be another Dan Wilkinson
