bnacpa
This is a recent article from Paul Woody, who reports for both the Sporting News, covering the Redskins (now on Fox Sports.com) and the Richmond Times Dispatch ... The article is from the Richmond paper: Redskins appear first in line for Brunell Jaguars would receive third-round draft choice in exchange for veteran QB BY PAUL WOODY TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Feb 13, 2004 Whether Mark Brunell will be the Washington Redskins' quarterback on March 3 remains to be seen. It does seem that the Redskins are the leaders at the moment in the sweep- stakes to acquire Brunell from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The NFL has a moratorium on trades until March 3, but teams can discuss trade parameters in the meantime. According to a league source, the Redskins have offered Brunell a three-year contract worth around $20 million, including an $8-million signing bonus. In return for trading Brunell, the Jaguars will receive the Redskins' third- round draft choice in the upcoming draft, which is the 73rd selection overall. The details of that deal could change between now and March 3, depending on whether another team opts to make a bid for Brunell. The Jaguars decided to go with quarterback Byron Leftwich, the team's first-round pick last year. Jacksonville initially planned to release Brunell on March 2 to avoid paying him a $2-million roster bonus. Then the Redskins made their trade inquiry, and the Jaguars thinking changed. Jacksonville is allowing Brunell to meet with any team that is interested in him provided that team has made a concrete trade offer to the Jaguars. Thus far, only the Redskins have made an offer and met with Brunell. The Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Bucs have been rumored to be interested in Brunell. The Dolphins interest seems to be strong, but the Dolphins can't trump the Redskins' offer. The Dolphins do not have a second-round pick, and their third-round pick is lower than the Redskins. The Dolphins own the 20th pick in the first round but apparently are not willing to give that up for Brunell. In an intriguing twist to the story, if the Redskins get Brunell then the Dolphins reportedly are interested in acquiring Washington quarterback Patrick Ramsey in exchange for the 20th pick in the first round. Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said earlier this week that no matter what veteran quarterback is acquired, Ramsey, "isn't going anywhere." A team source affirmed that notion. Ramsey has a 6-10 mark in the games he has started for the Redskins. The contract the Redskins are willing to give Brunell, who will be 34 on Sept. 17, indicates Gibbs thinks he can start for the team in 2004. Gibbs said earlier this week that everyone will compete for a job when training camp opens. However, in his previous tenure as the Redskins' coach, Gibbs never started training camp with an open competition at quarterback. Brunell is an 11-year NFL veteran. He has played in 122 games and started 117 during his career. He was the Jaguars' starter from 1995 through the first three games of last season. Then, he was sidelined with an elbow injury, giving the Jaguars the chance to start put Leftwich in the lineup. Brunell did not take another snap after that. Brunell has completed 60 percent of his passes, has thrown 144 touchdown passes, 86 interceptions and has a quarterback rating of 85.2. Contact Paul Woody at (804) 649-6444 or pwoody@timesdispatch.com I find it interesting that he says that Gibbs has never had an open QB competition heading into training camp. I really don't think that Gibbs would lie to Ramsey. He would risk losing credibility with him. Never with us, however
citigent
im sure it will be open but a tie or even a slight loss will go to brunell, because of the vet. factor
bnacpa
Ramsey is a Veteran as well ... two years of experience. Let's not forget that while his foot pain was still manageable, he was the highest rated passer in the NFL through the first 4 or 5 weeks of 2003.
