If Champ leaves do you think...

I don't think it matters. Champ isn't going anywhere. Outside of his love for huge signing bonuses....he's been a solid player and the type the Gibbs should like.

He doesn't showboat or run his mouth to the media. He goes up against the other teams top WR...wins more battles than he loses...then goes home at night. We've got the vocal leaders like Arrington and Smoot on the D. We can afford Champ to be the lead by example type. Playing hurt.....not complaining about injuries.

This isn't Stephen Davis all over again. Champ is younger and doesn't miss games.

I love Champ but I think he is gone.

Smoot is good, but I don't think that he can hold up as a top flight DB against some of the more physical #1 WR's.

I think we would need to get a good corner right away to help him out if Champ goes.

Hopefully we don't have to worry about it.

I think this is a bigger issue than getting a veteran QB if you ask me.

Yes it is.

The Skins already have a pretty good young QB under contract and they could lose a shutdown corner while they chase down an injury prone 33 years left handed (Samuels on the blidside) QB in exchange for picks.

I hope you are right about that one BTJ... I am concerned, however, that they haven’t started contract talks again with his agent. Maybe after Gibbs has an opportunity to make whatever assessments he needs to make – but March approacheth quickly !

I was pretty sure in season that Champ preferred to leave. I'm not sure where he stands now. To the question, I think that Smoot could be a shut down corner... if we can start generating pressure. There were numerous observations about qb's not testing Smoot a lot and some suggested they attacked Champ's side more than Smoot. The difference between the two of them seems to be that Smoot makes positive plays more often. He seems to have more interceptions, batted balls etc. Champ is a better athlete and probably better in pure coverage. The difference is the penalty Smoot makes a team pay. Champ is a great cover guy usually, but he rarely makes an opponent pay for attacking his man. He hasn't been a great threat ever really. He's not a playmaker. He may be an elite player (not last year in my opinion), but he is not a playmaker.

Funny thing about playmaking CBs- they usually get a lot of plays made on them as well.

Give me the solid cover guy over the big play CB who guesses too much any day of the week....JMHO.

First off let me start by saying Welcome to the board kam!! I think Smoot would do OK without Champ, but it would still be an incredible blow to our defense if we lost Champ. I have a bunch more respect for Smoot now after his performance this past season. Playing through the pain of that chest injury had to be tough.

Hopefully the team will get a deal done with Champ and we won't have to sweat this out any longer. He is the best shutdown corner in the league right now and a huge part of our defense. Plus, he's like one of the very few guys that have been here a while. We need stability in the locker room and he's one of the guys who can bring it.

First of all, I don't see the correlation between Smoot becoming a shut down corner and Champ leaving. But it brings up the point: What's the coaching staff think?

With the pursuit of Brunnell I'm starting to think that such priorities as resigning Champ and addressing the d-line have taken a backseat and are no longer the team's top objectives this offseason. I have no idea how we'll be able to sign Champ, bring in a top-vet d-lineman, address the rb situation, add youth to the d-line AND add much needed cheap depth to positions like linebacker and o-line when the team's first move in free agency seems to be signing a 33 year old qb to a $20 million deal AND giving away a third round pick in the process.

Greg Williams defense is predicated on the corners being able to play man coverage in a lot of situations. Not sure if Smoot could be a shut down corner but I feel fairly certain that if Champ does leave, he'll be replaced with a guy who is not currently on our roster who can get the job done.

So which one is it? "bring in a top-vet d-lineman" or "add youth to the d-line"?

As I tried asking you in another thread, do you think that ALL of the needs you listed can be fixed in one offseason? No team could do all of that. Perhaps Gibbs is addressing what he perceives as the most pressing need right now.

There is no doubt in my mind that Smoot can be our #1 CB, or any team, but just don't try to compare him with Champ.

It's even better to have two players in that caliber on the team. I've always been on Champ's side and always will be, no matter we re-sign him or not. He's the type of player I like since DG.
