Erickson completes his staff

CONTRA COSTA TIMES AND WIRE REPORTS

NFL notes

Coach Dennis Erickson completed a month-long makeover of his 49ers staff Tuesday by naming former Raiders assistant Ron Lynn as the secondary coach and Scott Swartz as offensive quality control coach.

Lynn, 59, coached the Raiders defensive backs the past four seasons after serving in a similar role with the New England Patriots from 1997-99. Lynn replaces Brett Maxie, who joined the Atlanta Falcons staff under new coach Jim Mora, who had been the 49ers' defensive coordinator.

"Having known Ron Lynn for over 25 years, I am excited to add an experienced, quality coach of his caliber to our staff," Erickson said in a statement. "With his vast NFL coaching background, he will be a very valuable asset not only to (defensive coordinator) Willy Robinson but the entire defensive staff."

Prior to joining the Patriots, Lynn was a defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins (1994-96), Cincinnati Bengals (1992-93) and San Diego Chargers (1986-91). Lynn, a Pleasanton resident, also has coached at Cal, San Jose State and Pacific and with the USFL's Oakland Invaders.

Swartz spent the past two years as wide receivers coach at Northern Arizona, and he worked as a graduate assistant for three years at Oregon State under Erickson.

I find it interesting that he was the DC for us when Norv first came here, but Norv did not keep him (Ron was with the Raiders last year) when he took over as HC.

Norv was hired in '94 and brought Ron Lynn in as DC. He sucked for us and was fired and then we brought in Mike Nolan from 97-99. Mike Nolan wasn't good in Washington either, but looking back on it it had to be the players, considering how well Nolan did with the G-men and now Baltimore.
