bubba9497
Skins hold Brunell edge Joe Gibbs has reportedly told Mark Brunell he would be the Redskins' starter, giving Washington an apparent advantage on Miami in pursuing the quarterback. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/7924467.htm Joe Gibbs' scheduled dinner meeting with Mark Brunell turned into something of an autograph session when it took a detour to a St. Augustine hospital Monday night, but ultimately the gathering accomplished its purpose. The Redskins coach made it clear to the Jaguars quarterback he would be the starter and there would be no quarterback controversy if he came to Washington, according to an NFL source. That seemingly removes a significant obstacle keeping Brunell from balking at going to Washington in a trade. It also decreases the Dolphins' chances of landing Brunell as their starting quarterback for 2004. And the Dolphins' search for a new starter was dealt another blow by the Redskins on Tuesday. Gibbs told The Washington Post incumbent starter Patrick Ramsey, who would be displaced if Brunell joins the Redskins, ''is not available'' to any team in a subsequent trade scenario. RAMSEY UNAVAILABLE Although the Dolphins have refused to comment on any aspect of their quarterback search, it is reasonable to believe that if the Redskins land Brunell, Miami might be interested in Ramsey. Gibbs closed that door after returning from the meeting with Brunell that took an unscheduled stop at a hospital because Gibbs suffered a diabetic insulin imbalance during his flight from Washington. Brunell drove Gibbs to the hospital. ''It certainly was the most unusual first greeting between a player and a coach ever,'' said agent Leigh Steinberg, who represents Brunell. 'It was, `Hello, my name is Coach Gibbs, I don't know that I'm feeling too well.' But actually Mark was impressed with Coach Gibbs, and they certainly saw a lot of common ground on different points.'' ''The dinner went good,'' Gibbs told The Post. So where does that leave the Dolphins? Although they are still hopeful they can get Brunell, it would take some extraordinary measures. What once looked like a natural and easy move -- the Dolphins want Brunell, and he wants to play in Miami -- that would occur in free agency, now would require innovation if not recklessness to accomplish. LESS TO OFFER Because they traded their second-round pick to New England in exchange for the right to draft Wade Smith last season, the Dolphins are in a battle for Brunell while holding less ammunition than other teams. The Redskins and Chargers -- another player in the Brunell chase -- have second-round picks to offer. Miami is also without a fifth-round pick, which was traded to San Diego for Junior Seau. The team does have a pick in every other round except the seventh, in which it has two picks. So in order for the Dolphins to trump the Redskins' offer to Jacksonville, they would have to use their first-round pick. That's because even if the price for the quarterback is not as high as the second-round pick that has been reported, the Dolphins can't get him with their third-rounder because they pick behind Washington and San Diego in that round. With no second-rounder, Miami's next available pick is its first-rounder, the 20th pick overall. A team source said Monday the Dolphins would not be inclined to yield that pick for Brunell. The only way the team might be willing to do so, however, is if it realizes it cannot sign defensive end Adewale Ogunleye to a long-term contract and instead can get a first-round pick back when he becomes a restricted free agent March 3 and signs with another team. The Dolphins have no such guarantee and don't want to lose Ogunleye, whom general manager Rick Spielman regards as a blossoming star. RICKY RAY UPDATE The agent for CFL quarterback Ricky Ray, who worked out for the Dolphins last month, said he received a contract offer from another team this week but would not act on that offer until he speaks with the Dolphins, perhaps as early as today. ''I want to hear what the Dolphins have to say as well,'' Ken Staninger said. Ray is scheduled to visit the Jets today.
jbooma
Hmm well as long as we keep Ramsey I am happy. It is looking more and more that Brunell will be our QB :paranoid:
MadMonkey
Had the Chargers drafted Mike Vick when they had the chance, they wouldn't be needing a QB
Cskin
So.....Ramsey sits a year or two.... then competes with Brunnel for the starting job then(if he doesn't beat him outright before then). Ramsey gets the benefit from sitting behind a talented vet while he learns the nuances of the game. I actually like the idea, as long as the acquisition doesn't involve the 2nd rounder. bigchuck
Man! Ramsey seems peeved that he'll be sitting. I dont blame him. Hes a competitor. He'll get his job back once Brunell gets hurt again. I dont believe he can stay healthy.

Right there! It may not have a quote but wouldnt you be pissed if you wanted to start? :puke:

That doesn't sound like Gibbs. I would be very surprised if he told Brunell anything other than it will be an open competition
Ghost of
How could he tell Brunell he'd be guaranteed the starter if he told the media yesterday that EVERYONE will be competing for jobs? That's like basically saying Gibbs is a liar. But don't worry, we're gonna have 200 more threads today blaming Patrick and cursing Gibbs. lol

Lowghost
The only guy who has a guaranteed starting job is John Hall, IMO. Every other position will go to the guys that earn it.:2cents:
