2003 season slogan:

Fun 'n Done

2004 preseason slogan:

Happy Days Are Here Again!

2004 media guide coverboy:

New (and former) head coach Joe Gibbs

Positives from 2003:

The development of Patrick Ramsey at quarterback was a silver lining in 2003. He likely won't get beat up like he did last season, but earned a lot of respect playing through pain. Ramsey could flourish under Joe Gibbs.

Top needs:

1. DEFENSIVE ISSUES — Most of the changes will likely be on defense, starting with the front four. Gregg Williams needs two pluggers in the middle of the defense to clog up an opponents' run game. So expect at least two new additions here to be paired with Brandon Noble (if healthy). The Redskins sorely lack a threat off the perimeter that can put pressure on the quarterback every down. Neither Bruce Smith or Regan Upshaw graded as players you need from the right end spot. The biggest task of course will be trying to re-sign CB Champ Bailey. Williams needs Bailey locking up with receivers so he can be aggressive upfront.

2. BRUISER AT RUNNING BACK — Expect a couple significant changes on offense, most notably at the running back position. Neither Trung Canidate nor Ladell Betts are answers as starters in Gibbs' philosophy. The Redskins needs a power back with good durability. Don't be surprised if that's a discarded veteran.

3. UPGRADE AT TIGHT END — Expect major changes at the tight end spot. They need to find a couple tight ends who will make a difference in the run game and also help protect Ramsey.

Overall outlook:

Look for the Redskins to address most of these holes and establish themselves as a playoff team very soon, perhaps next season. The Redskins will definitely be headed in the right direction if Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato give Gibbs the right mix of players to address their holes. The biggest problem though could be depth with all the money spent on starters and guys who have been busts.
