FWIW GBN report on the Brunell

They say Jacksonville has only been offered a 4th and not a 2nd as been reported.

February 10

(9:00 AM): Brunell action heats up...Jacksonville QB Mark Brunell's meeting with Washington head coach Joe Gibbs last evening turned into a little more than expected when Gibbs, a diabetic, had a reaction due to an insulon imbalance as the two sat down to dinner. Brunell ended up driving Gibbs to a local hospital where he was treated and released and the meeting went on as planned. As reported last evening, however, there is no further word on the substance of the talks; meanwhile, Jacksonville is saying that no trade is imminent. That's in large part because the market for Brunell has gotten very busy. San Diego is believed to have talked with the Jaguars sometime yesterday about Brunell, while Dallas also reportedly called several times and Miami, apparently Brunell's personal first-choice, remains in the picture. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has also made some low-level contact, although the Buccaneers are reportedly keeping their interest low-key for fear of upsetting incumbent QB Brad Johnson unhappy. There are also conflicting reports as to what kind of compensation the Jaguars are being offered for Brunell. Its been widely reported, for example, that Washington has offered its second round pick, the 41st selection overall, at the 2004 draft for Brunell, while Jacksonville is reportely quietly hoping that with so many teams interested that they might squeeze a first-rounder of the deal. Miami, for one, doesn't have a second round pick to deal, having traded it away, while Dallas does have a second rounder, but only the 53rd pick overall so either would likely have to part with their #1 pick to come up with Brunell if the Redskins indeed were offering its #2 pick . There are several league sources, though, which are saying that the best the Jaguars have been offered to date is actually only a 4th round pick for Brunell.

Accoding to the Unwritten Book of Laws...does this mean we would not have to start him

Yeah. No duh. If any team offered a second for Brunell, the conversation would end. Jacksonville would take it and run away giggling at their good fortune and the other team's panic.

We will know once Jacksonville takes on the bonus. They will not pay him unless they know for sure they are getting a high pick.

lol maybe one twist to this story... (just guessing here) lets say when Jax leaked that redskins are close to making a deal for MB so that they might get more for MB then a 4th round pick. Then redskins leak a story saying that Redskins offered a 2nd round pick to scare away some of the competition and somehow at the end Redskins get MB for a 4th round pick... man i got too much time on my hand but that would be funny if that is how it goes down...

Well if its a 4th round Redskins pick, it must be in 2005, because we dont have a 4th round pick in 2004. :D

Well, it just says a 4th rounder is the BEST they have gotten. They are saying thats their best offer, but maybe its not ours. Maybe we are offering a player...

If we trade something less than a second rounder for Brunell - a mid round pick, for instance - does that mean he's a backup, or a starter?

Part of the thought process is that we won't give up a 2nd rounder for someone who would "just" be a backup... regardless of whether that's true, would giving up something less indicate he's not going to be the default #1?

If so, good.
