bubba9497
Gibbs, Brunell Hold Chat Coach Makes Detour To Hospital on Visit By Nunyo Demasio http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27140-2004Feb9.html Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs suffered a diabetic reaction due to an insulin imbalance last night at the start of a dinner meeting in the Jacksonville, Fla., area with Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell. The three-time Pro Bowl player drove Gibbs to Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, about 40 miles from Jacksonville, where the coach was treated in the emergency room and released by 8:30 p.m., according to a hospital official. Gibbs -- who flew to Florida to speak to Brunell about joining the Redskins -- returned to the dinner afterward. "He had an imbalance in his insulin, they gave him the required dosage to correct the imbalance and he went on his way," Redskins spokesman Karl Swanson said last night. "They didn't keep him there. They gave him what he needed and he left." When Gibbs, 63, announced his return to the Redskins on Jan. 7, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with diabetes since retiring in 1992. Gibbs -- the second-oldest coach in the NFL -- viewed it in a characteristically positive light, saying that it will force him to keep a promise to his wife about being conscious of his diet and sleep habits. The dinner with Brunell -- which started after 7 p.m. -- was originally scheduled last week, and the Redskins hoped it would be to seal a deal. However, the asking price for the 33-year-old left-handed quarterback markedly increased after the trade became public over the weekend, complicating and delaying Washington's intention to finalize an agreement this week. According to sources, the Redskins were ready to offer a second-round pick in this April's draft, putting them in the best position against their main competitors, the Miami Dolphins (who don't have a second-round pick) and the Dallas Cowboys (who don't appear to want to part with a second-round pick or higher). But the San Diego Chargers have belatedly joined the fray, and can offer a better second-round choice than the Redskins. The Chargers have the 35th pick in the second round, six spots higher than the Redskins' 41st choice. San Diego also has the top pick in the draft, and Mississippi quarterback Eli Manning is a favorite to be chosen No. 1. However, the Chargers would probably switch gears and choose a prospect at another position if they landed Brunell. Yesterday, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith was traveling from Hawaii, where he attended Sunday's Pro Bowl game. Smith is expected to preempt any Redskins deal by making an offer this week. An additional hurdle is that a mystery team is lurking with an offer it hopes doesn't become public, said a source with knowledge of the situation. The team is believed to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who wouldn't want to upset veteran quarterback Brad Johnson if a deal falls through. Jacksonville hopes that the clamor for Brunell -- who was the scout-team quarterback by the end of last season -- drives the price to a first-round pick. The Redskins still have certain advantages if they are willing to make Brunell the starter over quarterback Patrick Ramsey. Brunell desires to play for a playoff-caliber team, and is enticed by a Hall of Fame coach and an owner, Daniel Snyder, with a reputation for not sparing costs."No one wants to walk into a quarterback controversy," Brunell's agent, Leigh Steinberg said last night before the meeting with Gibbs. "The prospect of playing for a living legend like Joe Gibbs is very desirable. Playing in the nation's capital in front of all those rabid fans is also a draw. And it's a plus having an owner like Dan Snyder. Mark is excited about meeting Joe Gibbs." The trade interest in Brunell was unexpected by the Jaguars, who intended to release him by March 3, the start of free agency. At midnight on March 3, Brunell is set to receive a $2 million roster bonus. Brunell is in the unusual position of being under contract and having a say in his destination. Brunell -- whose salary cap figure is set to be $10.5 million -- becomes a free agent after the 2004 season. Gibbs's pursuit of Brunell appears to be more of an indication of the coach's comfort zone with veteran quarterbacks than any flaws with Ramsey. After watching film of the Redskins' 2003 season, Gibbs praised Ramsey for his strong arm, toughness and smarts. Last year's coaches gave Ramsey one of the best grades among Redskins players, a B-plus, said a Redskins source. Friday at Redskins Park, Gibbs informed Ramsey that he would be meeting with a veteran quarterback, without going into detail, said a source. Ramsey has a relatively cheap contract that expires in 2006, meaning that the Redskins could afford to keep him as a reserve if Brunell becomes the starter. Gibbs won three Super Bowl titles after becoming Redskins coach in 1981, and he was notorious for occasionally sleeping on a cot at Redskins Park, and taking late-night breaks between game-planning to devour a half pound of candy and chocolate bars. "It was the philosophy of work like a horse, eat like a horse, look like a horse," Gibbs said to laughter at his introductory news conference last month. "I can't eat like that anymore. I have to watch everything I eat."

The same guy that convinced Snyder that 'other teams' were vigorously pursuing Sanders and drove up his price? Right on DH.... Fold on this one and let someone else call it. @DCGoldPants
I think that if we don't get Brunell.....nobody in the Front Office will be crushed. There are other QB's who COULD play out there.....and who would be cheaper.
