bubba9497
Brunell, Redskins talking but no trade imminent http://www.foxsports.com/content/view?contentId=2130534 ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are letting Mark Brunell talk directly to the Washington Redskins and other teams interested in trading for him. The Jaguars have been approached by at least four teams about their expendable three-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Miami, San Diego and Dallas are among other teams in the running for the 33-year-old quarterback. Washington coach Joe Gibbs was scheduled to meet with Brunell in Florida Monday night in what was described as a get-to-know-you session. Jacksonville has time to ponder proposals because the NFL's offseason trading period doesn't begin until March 3. Paul Vance, Jacksonville's senior vice president of football operations, said no deal was imminent. Brunell has thrown for 25,698 yards and 144 touchdowns since he became Jacksonville's starter in the team's inaugural season in 1995. But he lost the starting job to rookie Byron Leftwich early last season. Brunell has one year left on his contact, and he will count $10.5 million against the salary cap next season if the Jaguars don't cut or trade him. Brunell has made it clear that he wants to go to a team where he can be the starter without igniting a quarterback controversy, although that might happen if he goes to Washington. The Redskins have promoted Patrick Ramsey as their quarterback of the future. Ramsey threw 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his second season last year before missing the final five games with a foot injury. The price for Brunell has been increasing and now appears to be a second-round draft pick. Miami is considered Brunell's preferred destination, but the Dolphins don't have a second-round selection this year. The Jaguars will have to pay Brunell a $2 million roster bonus if he is with the team on March 1. Vance said Jacksonville will consider working out a sign-and-trade deal with Brunell. What This Means... To Mark Brunell: Suddenly an aging, injury-prone left-handed quarterback is a hot commodity among NFL teams. Brunell found a comfy spot on the Jaguars' bench when Byron Leftwich was elevated to starter. No longer needed on the one team Brunell's ever started for, the 12-year pro may land in D.C., Miami, Dallas or San Diego. Whichever team claims his rights in the off-season, Brunell enjoy a return to a starting lineup. "We do have permission to have some discussions with the Redskins," Brunell's agent, Leigh Steinberg said. "Mark was very interested in getting to know the coach, the philosophy and the personnel for any team that he could go to."
Whiskeypeet
You know, I have an incredibly hard time understanding some of the drama associated with this potential Brunell trade. I understand the angst over potentially losing Ramsey as well as parting with our second round pick (although given our draft record the losing the pick might not mean much). However, I get totally lost when reading the responses of those who are throwing up their hands in disgust over the thought of shelving Ramsey for a season or two. Pat had a really up and down season last year. At times he looked brilliant...and at times he really struggled. No doubt, many of those struggles were due to factors beyond his control.......but he looked, at times, as though he needed to take a step back and gain some perspective. I think we have all read the discussions concerning whether or not Pat was taking too long to get rid of the ball/was having trouble making quick reads/reading defenses last year. Obviously those issues are difficult to judge as a result of our line play. BUT, finally we have a coach who is willing to constructively analyze EVERY position on the team. How many years do we have to watch the Skins fall on their collective faces because on part of the team was completely incapable of doing what they were asked to(the O-Line last year, QBs and WRs the year before)? I doubt this is the case with Patrick in the long term and maybe even in the short but obviouly Gibbs thinks it MIGHT be. This move may mean the difference between playoffs and no playoffs for this team. Of course it could also mean the difference between drafting and not drafting a very nice player in the second round that could help us out for years as well. Im torn on that aspect of this trade but I don't know if sitting Pat for a year is really such a bad thing.
