thinker
There are several factors that will determine what price jax will get in trade for Brunell: 1) Everyone knows jax HAS to cut Brunell if he is not traded shortly because of his cap number and upcoming roster bonus. 2) No team is going to trade for Brunell unless they have a "signed" deal with Brunell to change his contract. Brunell has a $6.5 million salary in 2004 -- NO ONE will trade for that contract. 3) Because no team will give up much to get a guy they don't know if they can sign, Brunell is mostly in charge of where he goes. 4) If Brunell WANTS to come to play for JOE GIBBS, he can easily make it impossible for jax to trade him to say Miami by not agreeing to a contract with them. 5) If Brunell WANTS to play for JOE GIBBS, then he isn't likely to want to make the Skins pay a huge price to jax to get him - don't forget he feels jax scr*wed him. 6) If Brunell is meeting with GIBBS on Monday, Brunell will be certain that he wants to be a Redskin by Monday evening. 7) If GIBBS wants Brunell and Brunell wants the Skins, the price to jax is not going to be very high. Joey T
So what's your bottom line? What I mean is, what will the 'Skins have to give up? It it's our #2 this year as reported, I don't like the deal.
Hitman56
No way is he worth a #2. Maybe a #6 at the most.
thinker
What has been reported is that someone offered a 2nd rounder for him - not necessarily the Skins. If people are still negotiating, it's probably because that team couldn't reach an agreement with Brunell. Again for the reasons stated above, Brunell will largely be able to determine where he goes, because if he refuses to make a deal with another team, jax will have to cut him - then he will be an urfa. If the Skins want him and he wants us and we offer him a contract and opportunity to play that he believes is the best he would get as an urfa, Brunell can either force jax to trade him only to the Skins or really prevent jax from trading him at all. Brunell, therefore is really already mostly an urfa. Bottom line -- under those circumstances, if we trade for him at all, I really doubt it would be for anything better than our 3rd rounder. If we still had our 4th rounder then I'd say that would be the right price. The likliest scenario may be a conditional pick next year based on playing time -- I'd guess a 4th to become a 3rd if he plays alot.
Joey T
I like the 'conditional' aspect of next years picks (4-7) scenario.
Prosperity
yeah if its conditional it would be great, if he starts we give Jax a 4 if he doesn't we give them something lower.
>>Spearhead>>
Give up a 2 and create instant QB controversary....? I don't like this at all. Quality backups are a necessity, but we have more glaring needs in FA then this- before March 1 even!..... there has to be more to this
thinker
Spearhed, as discussed above, it is extremely unlikely that we'll be giving up a 2 for Brunell. What is the definition of a quality backup? A player that can step in and play almost as well as your starter. What's the most important backup on any team? Generally the qb. You can hide a weak backup at any other position alot of the time, but not at qb. A weak back up qb who gets in the game compromises your ENTIRE gameplan and playbook on offense, defense and special teams. There aren't many instances where a team won very many games with a backup qb who was a significant dropoff from the starter. The only example I can think of is when mcnabb and detmer got hurt in 2002 for the iggles.
method man
i wish we could get jeff blake instead although he is leon. jax may have announced that someone offered a #2 to push up the trade value of brunell. that is the oldest trick in the book. i believe we may possibly be offering rod gardner, taylor jacobs, trotter, or one of our linemean, although i really doubt it. the jags may want one of our receivers to be their #2, altho they already have KJ.
