Canadian Hog
Inmate, no offence, but stop making the predictions. No doubt, Brunell would help this team to win, but the huge patrick ramsey fan in me gives me mixed emotions regarding the move. I have a bad feeling that if Brunell comes aboard, he will be given assurances that he will start, or that he will at the very least have a chance to win the job in training camp. It would be much more enjoyable seeing one of our "OWN" talents growing, developing, maturing, and in the process helping our team reach the top. For me personally, it would be a very difficult process to learn to love and root for somebody else's talent that we have brought aboard at such a key position yet again. But then again, what do I know that Coach Gibbs doesn't.

That applies in all situations except Dieon Sanders, who was NEVER a redskin. At this point, we must defer judgement to Coach Gibbs. With that said, not everything he does will be popular. The decisions that are the toughest to swallow will probably be the most fruitful! HTTR! :eaglesuck

inmate running the asylum
Most of you younger guys have not lived through the Joe Gibbs era as I have, so here is my latest take on the prospects of signing Mark Brunell. First of all I think it is highly likely Brunell will sign with the Redskins, because from all indications "most of the parameters have already been worked out." :fortune: Besides Zeus and Miss Cleo already told me he would. According to the WP and Florida newspapers, Gibbs is flying down to Florida Monday to speak personally with Brunell. This by itself is huge. Head coaches just don't fly around the country to speak personally with players, who only a few weeks ago was rumored to be cut. The last time Gibbs flew down to a players home to convince him to play for the Redskins, was 1981 when Gibbs met with John Riggins following his 1980 suspension by Bobby Beathard. Gibbs convinced Riggins that there was a new sheriff in town and the Skins needed Riggins to return. Riggins did and two Super Bowls followed in 1982 and 1983. More recently Gibbs flew up to Buffalo to convince Greg Williams to sign as our new assistant head coach. So flying off to meet with Brunell ranks right up there with Riggins and Williams in importance if you ask me. So if Gibbs is meeting personally with Brunell, then Brunell figures prominently in his plans. But the last thing required is for Gibbs and Brunell to reach some kind of understanding as to where Brunell and Ramsey fit in the Plan. Brunell has stated publicly that he wants to play with a contender where he has a chance to start, and previously hinted that Miami was that team. But I believe that Gibbs will convince Brunell to sign with the Redskins, by assuring him that he CAN compete for the starting QB job. If Gibbs can convince Brunell to play for the Redskins and just be the backup quarterback, then he is even a greater salesman then I thought. The fact that they are both born-again Christians will be immensely helpful here, from the standpoint of trust. So where does that leave Ramsey? I believe they will both compete for the starting job and it will be Ramsey's JOB TO LOSE. In other words Ramsey will not just be given the starting job on a platter, but will have to earn it in the preseason. This is the way most coaches handle the QB position, unless you have a Joe Montana or Bret Favre already locked in as your quarterback. This is the best of both worlds really. If Brunell wins the starting job, he will continue to mentor Ramsey. For although Ramsey has a lot of promise, he is still not an upper echelon quarterback yet. The most revealing thing to watch for if the Skins sign Brunell, is at what salary? If Brunell is signed at a $1-2 million salary -- commensurate with a backup quarterback -- it probably means that Gibbs considers him now to be a backup quarterback in ability. If Brunell is signed at a much higher salary -- say $4-5 million per season or with incentives that go that high -- Gibbs probably then considers Brunell his starting quarterback. Gibbs has always tried to have at least two quality quarterbacks on his rosters. After all we saw what happened to Atlanta and the Jets last year when both their QB's were lost to injury. Both team seasons were screwed from the beginning. Why are some of you guys up tight about this signing? Gibbs knows what he is doing believe me. And just like many of us figured, we are in store for another entertaining roller coaster preseason ride. :jump:
fansince62
what does this all suggest? brunell won't settle for back-up status as a precondition. so let's work on the assumption that Gibbs must feel that PR isn't enough: otherwise, why stir the popt? it also suggests, given Brunell's age, that Gibbs is reaching for an early run....again....why? this doesn't strike me as methodical team building for long-run stability: that is the case only if Brunell is the back-up from day one. Note to PR: Joe and his advisors have found something. better get in to Redskin Park! Also, learn as much as you can - it appears they're only going to b e around for 4-5 years, if that much, before transitioning over to someone lioke Williams. Not necessarily. All Gibbs has to do is be fair and convince Brunell that he will be allowed to compete for the starting job and that it is Ramsey's JOB TO LOSE. If Ramsey beats him out in the preseason -- so be it -- then Brunell has no gripe. Gibbs does want to win right away. And why not? Mediocrity the last 12 years is long enough. As for stability you can view the glass either half full or half empty. If Ramsey wins the starting job, you have long-run stability because you have a young QB at the helm. If Brunell wins the starting job, you still can have long-run stability, because Brunell can mentor Ramsey and he would then take over as a young starter in a couple of years. Old Glory
If Brunnell comes aboard..it is with Gibbs blessing that he will have a chance to start. I'm a huge Patrick Ramsey fan but the old school coaches believe that compitition can also make a guy elevate his game. This could be good for Ramsey.
