Redskins: 2004 Turnaround Team

Sorry if this was already posted.

I think that the Jaguars are still a year or two away, and the Lions aren't going to get much better, but the Redskins and the Texans should both have winning records next season.

Who's next: 2004's potential turnaround teams

Vinnie Iyer, Sporting News

The NFL has become a springboard for the lost and destitute during the free-agent era, and it's sure to launch another team or two in 2004.

There are four 5-11 teams that could become next year's Panthers:

Jaguars. If John Fox can do it in his second season as head coach, so can his former defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio. Jacksonville proved to be competitive with the Colts, and the Titans have salary-cap troubles. Del Rio already has a strong run defense in place, and the offense has explosive potential with Byron Leftwich and Fred Taylor. A little help in the secondary and at receiver would go a long way.

Redskins. What Bill Parcells did for the Cowboys, Joe Gibbs can do for their archrivals--speed up the learning curve with winning experience. There is some great talent in Washington, including Laveranues Coles and LaVar Arrington. Gibbs will get much more out of an underachieving offensive line to establish a ball-control, run-heavy scheme. The draft should bring answers for the team's biggest weakness, the defensive line.

Lions. Steve Mariucci did the best job he could in 2003, considering the team put 13 players on injured reserve. In 2004, a young defense will be healthier and continue to improve under new coordinator Dick Jauron. The offense again should get an early-draft boost, and Joey Harrington and Charles Rogers should develop into stars. The key to a quick turnaround, however, is finding a way to win on the road, where the Lions have lost a record 24 straight.

Texans. Dom Capers helped Carolina drop its "expansion" tag quickly and has done the same for Houston. Just as Domanick Davis and Andre Johnson were the right rookies to put around David Carr on offense, expect Capers and G.M. Charley Casserly to find the ideal young personnel for their 3-4 defense this offseason. If the Colts or Titans falter in the AFC South, watch out.

I think most people were predicting a dismal season for us.

That's true. The only person that I can recall who actually picked us to go to the playoffs was Ron Borges from MSNBC.com.

Leave it to the infamous Skins hater, Dr. Z, to predict horrible misfortune for our team.

Strong momentum and support (by the fans) for the skins with the additions of Coach Gibbs and the 'Godfather' of the Redkins, Darrell Green...the skins are sure to have a winning season. And if not, be happy right now because after this superbowl the skins are officially an undeated team for the 2004 season.

Well, BRING IT ON!!!

I hope the press (dr. z and peter king) take out the big guns and trash us, because the man is back.

With disipline we are leaps and bounds better than last year. I can't wait, but i'd like to sneak up on a few people... haha, our 0-5 preseason should do the trick, LOL.

Surprisingly, Peter King is already on the Joe Gibbs bandwagon. In today's Monday Morning Quarterback, he has the Skins ranked 13th in his "Fine Fifteen".

13. Washington (5-11). The Redskins dropped from No. 12 to No. 13 since the last Fine Fifteen because I remembered that their front seven averages about 96 years old.

Last year, not this year. We'll see what they all say this summer.

Well, that's because they thought Ramsey would either be a bust or have a rough go at it. Certainly they didn't predict the sudden and complete downfall of Spurrier. That would be miracuolus.
