Owens hopes Falcons bid to sign him

Ken Sugiura - Staff

Sunday, February 1, 2004

Houston --- For whatever it's worth, Terrell Owens has an eye on the Falcons.

Saturday, the impending free agent wide receiver talked about the possibility of signing with the Falcons and playing with quarterback Michael Vick.

"I guess it would be something similar to a [Michael] Jordan and a [scottie] Pippen," he said, referring to the famed Chicago Bulls pairing. "He'd be the Jordan, and I'd be the Pippen, however you want to put it."

Owens' words probably could be put in the category of idle chatter. The Falcons probably do not have the salary cap room to accommodate Owens, the San Francisco 49ers' four-time Pro Bowl selection. Further, the team might hesitate to invest so much money in the wide receiver position, having given Peerless Price a $10 million signing bonus last offseason.

Still, Owens named the Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles as potential homes for his considerable talent and raved about Vick, with whom he is friends. Owens also has an offseason home in the Atlanta area.

"That doesn't really weigh one way or the other," said Owens, who had 80 catches for 1,102 yards and nine touchdowns last season. "I just want to go somewhere where I can win."

Another tie Owens has with the Falcons is the team's new coaching staff. Coach Jim Mora came from the 49ers and brought Greg Knapp, the 49ers' offensive coordinator, among others, with him. Owens blew up at Knapp in a game this season, but both sides said they have made up.

"That may have a bit to do with it," Owens said. "I don't know what their cap situation is. We'll see how everything pans out."

I find it hard to believe that Atlanta's ownership would fork out big SB's and contracts to the WR's position two years in a row, especially considering how awful their secondary was last year. I would have to say that TO will probalby end up in Philly, and Atlanta is keeping a close eye on the negotiations with Champ.

I do find it funny though that Peerless Price wanted to be a #1 WR and paid like a #1 and then gets his wish and then does nothing but cry about being double teamed in Atlanta. Price needs TO if he is gonna be anything like he was in Buffalo.

I don't think Rich McKay will go for another receiver. They really really really need some help defensively, and from his days in TB, I think that they will go for some DL help. However, I do hope he lands in ATL just because I don't want Dallas, Philly or Baltimore picking up a talent like him.

Coach Reid was quoted as saying he had no interest in T.O. because of personality conflicts Iby Howard Eskin and Vai Sikahema).

They also both reported that the Eagles would be looking at Darrell Jackson, Justin McCariens, and Drew Bennet.

Take it for what it's worth.....

New England said flat out "no" on T.O.- their management team found it laughable and said they have no interest in a pleyer like Owens- they think it would disrupt the philosophy of their entire organization.

As I have said before, I shall say again

Nike has it all worked out.

They will do their BEST to place TO in Atlanta.

They will tell him to take a cap friendly deal and then compensate him with MILLIONS in a shoe deal to run around and catch passes from Mike Vick.

They will offer Arthur Blank MILLIONS to sign him and then give him some styrofoam Swooshes to put up in the stadium and call it a 'marketing deal.

Which is what it is. It's an opportunity for Nike to market Owens and Vick and sell a TON of shoes.

They've tipped their hand. They've already invested quite a large sum of money in a CGI based animated commercial with Vick throwing to Owens. They WILL try their best to make it a reality.

And for you young'ns that doubt it, why do you think Deion Sanders left a Super Bowl team to play in Dallas? To win a Super Bowl?

Nope, he was placed in Dallas by Nike.

And they will do their best to place Owens in Atlanta.

You heard it here first.
