Art
Guys out there who create graphics for the web, what program do you find is good for doing this? Creating images and all that stuff. Never done it before. Wondering what products to look at. I think it's just creating .gifs and all that. Just wouldn't know where to begin program wise. codeorama
Adobe Photoshop, or Macromedia's products. Macromedia has a package that comes with several programs called "studio MX". From their home website you can download trial versions of each product. Adobe allows trials of their products. There is a free product called "the Gimp", if you do a google search, you will find the website for it and you can download it for free, it is a photoshop clone, but I don't think it's anywhere near as easy to use as photoshop itself. I bought a similar product on ebay for a few dollars just to try it and a guy sent me a link to his web site where they are selling "bootlegs" of the actual adobe and macromedia products for 25-40 dollars, if you aren't above going that route. If you want the link, just pm me cause i know some people on this board are totally against that kind of thing.

Art
Just so I'm sure here, but with Photoshop, can I create a GIF from scratch. Meaning no picture to start the image. Just software stuff that helps me create it?
Die Hard
Art, yes on Photoshop. Simply put though... any graphic software will allow you to create a gif from scratch. That's as basic as it gets
BG
Photoshop. Can't beat it. Paint shop can work if you aren't looking to get too fancy as well as Fireworks. Fireworks usually comes with Dreamweaver. Not bad for the $.

It has a very good save for web feature which will show you the different ways of saving an image like jpg, gif, png, etc.... it will show the download time for each at speed such as 56K, T1, etc... I use 7 at work and LOVE it. I have fireworks as well and it isn't bad just a little harder to use.
WallyG3
Photoshop is good for editing pictures, but Macromedia's Fireworks is the best for creating web graphics from scratch.
BG
What Wally said right there. I like to create and edit existing images in Photoshop, then render them a bit in Fireworks. I'm just not as familiar with all the tools n PS as I am in FW's. Thing is Art, if you already have dreamweaver, you might have fireworks as well. They usually come bundled together.... You can bootleg the PS and be totally stacked for whatever you want to do........
Reaganaut
I ditto everyone who mentions Adobe Photoshop. If you send me a private email message I will set up a link and you can download the entire program from me by clicking a URL that will connect ot my machine directly. Just install it with the serial provided and voila. If you are not using it professionally to make money then nobody cares. I'd be happy to give some pointers as well. tex
I'm stuck in the he!! of Photo Shop 5.0...but I like it. Grab any version of PS and learn how to use it. It’s a good way to get your feet wet. You can always move on to something else later. PS will give you a firm base upon which to build.

Actually PS 7 I think has surpassed Fireworks now, I use both so it is all good.
