inmate running the asylum
O.k. guys, here are some records I personally compiled the other night, which I have not seen compiled exactly this way before, which we as Redskin fans can be proud of. I guess the miracle hiring of Joe Gibbs has inspired me. I should receive an ExtremeSkins award for this. I couldn't get all these friggin columns to line up the way I really wanted to, but I think you will be able to figure it out. This is a ranking of the "all time best teams based on winning percentages by a team in a season," counting the playoff wins and losses. Some teams would have been on this list based on their regular season record, but dropped off when they screwed up and lost in the playoffs. ======================== Ranking of All Time Best Teams Based on Winning Percentages in a Season - counting the playoffs - Year Team Record Pct. Coach 1972 Miami 17-0 1.000 Don Shula 1929 Green Bay 12-0-1 .961 Curly Lambeau 1923 Canton Bulldogs 11-0-1 .958 ? 1984 San Francisco 18-1 .947 Bill Walsh 1985 Chicago 18-1 .947 Mike Ditka 1976 Oakland 16-1 .941 John Madden 1962 Green Bay 14-1 .933 Vince Lombardi 1934 Chicago 13-1* .928 George Halas 1982 Washington 12-1 .923 Joe Gibbs 1949 Philadelphia 12-1 .923 Greasy Neale 1941 Chicago 12-1 .923 George Halas 1922 Canton Bulldogs 10-0-2 .916 ? 1942 Washington 11-1 .916 Ray Flaherty 1991 Washington 17-2 .894 Joe Gibbs 1978 Pittsburgh 17-2 .894 Chuck Noll 1998 Denver 17-2 .894 Mike Shannahan 1986 NY Giants 17-2 .894 Bill Parcells 1998 Minnesota 16-2 .888 Dennis Green 1936 Green Bay 11-1-1 .884 Curly Lambeau 1968 Baltimore 15-2 .882 Don Shula 1973 Miami 15-2 .882 Don Shula 1975 Pittsburgh 15-2 .882 Chuck Noll 1972 Dallas 15-2 .882 Tom Landry 1983 Washington 16-3 .842 Joe Gibbs 1984 Miami 16-3 .842 Don Shula * Chicago went 13-0 in the regular season, but lost the championship game to the NY Giants 30-13. The Canton Bulldogs in 1922 and 1923 were 21-0, but had 3 ties. The Washington Redskins have accomplished this feat 4 times, the most of any NFL team. Don Shula accomplished this feat 4 times, the most of any NFL coach. Joe Gibbs has accomplished this feat 3 times, second only to Don Shula. jbooma
Didn't one of the classic skins teams have a better record?? Like back in the 30's with Sammy Baugh?
RedskinsNation
My vote would go to the 70's Steelers teams because they were the only ones who were dominating on a consistent basis (4 SB wins in 6 years). Those teams not only were dominant year in year out for that stretch but they dominated on defense w/ the steel curtain, not to mention they had so many weapons on offense. Even though I was too young to experience it, as the case w/ many of those teams, whenever people talk about the greatest teams ever the Steelers always come to mind 1st - due to their longevity and also due to the fact that they were extremely well rounded on both sides of the ball. Bang
The fact that the Dolphin's opponents in 1972 had a combined winning % of .381 should exclude them from the top spot. It is literally the second easiest schedule in league history. Granted this list if based on winning %, and they didn't lose, but if they had to play any real competition that year,, like ,oh, say Sister Mary Catherine's School for the Blind I doubt they would have been undefeated. Still a great team,. but that fact gets buried in all the misty eyed reminiscience about them. ~Bang

Sorry Bang when you go undefeated without your starting QB you deserve the #1 spot, no one beat them. We lost to them as well and we were pretty good. skins19
Going undefeated, no matter what your opponents winning percentage is, is probably the toughest thing to do in sports. If all teams are playing against other teams of their experience level (i.e. NFL team against NFL team, college vs. college, etc.) then any team that goes undefeated deserves recognition. It has only been done once in the NFL and there have been better teams than the Dolphins who played schedules of similar strength and they were unable to go undefeated. Strength of schedule should not diminish any teams record. I think that is one of the most overrated stats because any team has the opportunity to win any game, no matter how good or bad the other is.
