Good sports history books

WHen I was little I used to go to the library down the street at my grandparents' and borrow football books. Something about the pictures and the images(often in black and white) filled me with a sense of awe and at that young age I definitely felt the "legend." I still look back to how I "used to" view the Vikings and Fran Tarkenton and those old pictures. The whole world, of course, was bigger and more wondrous than it is now, but anyways...

I've kind of had a rekindling of that fire and am looking for some good books on football and basketball(JUST FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL) I don't mind those books with specific or narrow foci, like When Pride Mattered which is about Vince Lombardi but also gives great insight into the Packers and football in that era. I would prefer that they touch on the sport and have some nice stories as part of the narrative.

I've also heard about Long Bomb which is about the XFL and is said to very entertaining and filled with insights into media culture and the lives of the players.

A long time ago I read "BO" about Bo Schembechler and I read an expose by the QB Thompson( I think) from Oklahoma that talked about the program there under Switzer.

I don't mind a somewhat hagiographical account, so long as it's interesting and intelligent. I know there's also Tandler's REdskins from A to Z, and I'll look into that too, being a Skins fan.

But got any other good ones?
