Slowik Named Coordinator; Kurt Schottenheimer Joins Staff

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - The Green Bay Packers promoted assistant Bob Slowik to defensive coordinator and hired former Detroit Lions assistant Kurt Schottenheimer as defensive backs coach Wednesday.

Slowik replaces Ed Donatell, who was fired Jan. 16 after the Packers lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs.

Slowik, who had served as defensive backs coach, has been with the Packers for four years. He has been a defensive coordinator in the NFL twice before, with Chicago from 1993-98 and Cleveland in 1999.

Schottenheimer, the younger brother of San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer, was defensive coordinator for the Lions. But coach Steve Mariucci recently selected former Bears coach Dick Jauron to replace Schottenheimer as defensive coordinator.

Why isn't he on San Diego's staff?
