Owens blasts Garcia, 49ers on his Web site

By Cam Inman - CONTRA COSTA TIMES

A few months after acquiring the rights to launch his own Web site, 49ers wide receiver Terrell Owens has used that forum this week to express some strong opinions about his team, and especially quarterback Jeff Garcia.

"It is his site, and he's gone on there and made statements," Owens' agent, David Joseph, confirmed Friday.

Those comments -- on terrellowens.com -- likely will turn out to be parting shots, considering that Owens is expected to become a free agent March 3. Joseph reiterated that Owens plans to void the final three years of his contract, something that likely won't happen until March 2.

Owens' Web site stopped posting messages Friday, and Joseph said Owens was "shutting things down" as he heads to Houston for next week's Super Bowl festivities.

Here are some takes Owens, 30, posted in the past week on his site (with his abbreviations spelled out for clarity):

• On quarterback Jeff Garcia, with whom he feuded last season: "I'm not blaming the whole season on him. But being a quarterback holds big responsibilities!!!! Having said that, how about his DUI situation? (Garcia was arrested Jan. 14 for drunken driving.) Everybody wants to criticize me for this and that, but have I represented the 49ers in that fashion? Nope -- I don't think so! I'm not the problem, I'm the answer! If I can't get a quarterback to help us win the Super Bowl -- I won't be back! I love the Bay. I've had great years here. But the situation has to be right."

• On criticism by an e-mailer for bringing up Garcia's arrest: "Yes, it is low that I mentioned his DUI. It was on the news all over the Bay Area and nationally. ... Sorry if I offended your favorite quarterback."

• On signing an extension with the 49ers: "I'm willing to work out a contract if the Niners can get a quarterback to match my skills as a receiver! I want to win a Super Bowl and I can be a big part of that. A receiver is only as good as his quarterback. ... Hopefully I don't go anywhere, but it doesn't look good, plus we need a quarterback to make a run at the Super Bowl."

• On the 49ers' Super Bowl aspirations: "Committed to winning? We're definitely looking through a different pair of eyes. Philly may not be the answer, but it doesn't look like the Niners are either, by the way the past season went. We had a chance to still make the playoffs and they left Jeff in there!"

• On possibly staying near his offseason home outside of Atlanta and playing with quarterback Michael Vick and the Falcons: "Hopefully the fantasy of Vick and I will come true."

Having been selected to the Pro Bowl the past four seasons with Garcia as the 49ers starting quarterback, Owens didn't say he would refuse to play again with Garcia. But he did endorse backup Tim Rattay for having a "better arm and pocket presence" than Garcia, and he stated that third-string quarterback Ken Dorsey is "the next Joe Montana."

Joseph said the 49ers haven't contacted him in regards to working out an extension for Owens, whom the 49ers could possibly label as their "franchise player" in an attempt to prevent other teams from acquiring him without giving the 49ers compensation. If Owens does leave, it's believed that he would count some $6 million against the 49ers' 2004 salary cap because of unamortized bonuses, including at least $1 million for making next month's Pro Bowl, Joseph said.

Joseph said he expects the Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens and Falcons to show interest in Owens if the 49ers don't re-sign Owens to a lucrative extension.

Owens told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Wednesday that he'd love to join the receiver-needy Eagles. "Not to take away from guys on their squad. I just don't see them being playmakers. And I, myself, can definitely benefit from (Donovan) McNabb's arm," Owens told the Inquirer. "McNabb is a great QB. ... Jeff is not someone that's a pocket passer that's going to throw 50 yards down the field."

Garcia wasn't available for comment, but according to 49ers strength development coordinator Terrell Jones, Garcia has been working out regularly at the team facility this month, even after his Jan. 14 arrest. Also working out frequently there have been Dorsey, cornerback Ahmed Plummer, fullback Terry Jackson and offensive linemen Dwayne Ledford and Scott Gragg

Sounds like he's trying to keep the Niners from even entertaining the thought of bringing him back. He just wants out.

Garcia is not that bad of a QB. Owens IS that whiney. He's also, even at 30, one of the top 5 WRs in the league. But for how long?

I hope they ship him to the Cardinals.

I tell ya, if he does go the the Eagles, and has a bad game and get booed by the Eagles fans(or psychopaths, whichever you prefer), you know with his ego he will lash out at them, and then the REAL fun will begin in Philly

OMG, I would pay so much money to have that happen....that is hilarious.....T.O. is such a little girl......

He was drafted in the third round, though, I think.....

Gotta be honest....thats a MONEY steal.....but he is still a little girl in a skirt.

Right, and McNabb has had who to throw to? Pinkston, Thrash, Torrance Small, and Charles Johnson. Garcia had Rice, Owens, and even Streets who is better than anyone Philly has. Some of Owens comments are outlandish, but he is also offers many compliments in regards to his other teammates (exception of Garcia). The Eagles need someone like Owens.

Oh and McNabb does have a superior arm to Garcia. McNabb just happens to be a bit erratic, but Owens complains about Garcia not being able to throw down the field. McNabb has thrown the ball over 70 yards on the QB challenge a few years ago.

Poor T.O. is misunderstood!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1720982

"As anyone knows who has spent any meaningful time in this section of the Web site, I take a very lighthearted approach, have fun with our members, do not take anything or any subject too seriously," Owens wrote, in a statement posted on terrellowens.com Monday night.

"To that end, the manner in which many of the answers were published by the local media was absurd as they took many of the questions and answers out of context, ignored the manner in which the answers were often given [most often playful]," Owens wrote.

:rotflmao:

He was probably also kidding when he blew up at that coach on the sidelines, or when he said his teammates didn't have any heart.

We really shouldn't take him so seriously.

This conversation was over before you even logged in to this site :)

Better than 10 bad seasons, one good season, and no rings right? :) Why should I care that the Redskins won a superbowl before I was eight? I'm not comparing the teams histories, but 'putting up a goal post to keep out the Eagles' is ironic when noting the recent history the Skins have had.

That's what you think! I wake up each morning frothing at the mouth at the chance to debate with you whether or not goal posts would keep Eagles players from visiting your house!
