inmate running the asylum
The latest cap status of all 32 teams as of January 1. Cap limit is estimated to go up to $ 79.5 million for 2004. Of course these figures don't list how many players a team has under contract. Philadelphia - $ 22.8 million under Dallas - $ 18.7 million under Skins - $ 8.6 million under NYG - $ 2.7 million under If we intend to sign Robaire Smith or Jevon Kearse, the Titans are 16.4 million over. If we intend to outbid the NY Giants for Cornelius Griffin, the Giants are only $ 2.7 million under. If we intend to outbid St. Louis for Grant Wistrom, St. Louis is $ 17.6 million under. If we intend to outbid New Orleans for Darren Howard, New Orleans is $ 22.6 million under. Cap status of all 32 teams
Tom [Giants fan]
That was from February of last year. The Giants have since let Sehorn go for $6+million savings for this coming season. Plus, they save almost $3 million by Holmes leaving. And Hamilton will probably save us a couple more million by retiring. Those numbers are not accurate. PCS
Actually Tom, I think they just update the original article. Right under the heading it says "Below is the amount of money each team is under of over the $78.1 million salary cap for 2004 as or December 31." The $78.1 being the important figure there. Though they are still inaccurate as teams lose playeres and such. Sides, we covered it earlier this month

Could'a, Would'a, Should'a
can you belive how many teams have cap room this year?
Taco Bell
yea i think that's a sign that FO's overall have finally acclimated comfortably to the salary cap system so being under (that far under especially) will become more common in future years
GrimReefa
Does anyone know what the effect of Bruce Smith's retirement will be on our cap (I've read we'll get $6 million more room)? Also, are there any other players coming off the cap? Thanks in advance...
scottb
The Eagles consistent competitive success hasn't gone unnoticed by the other teams...Especially considering that they should have won a SB if they had parted with just a little bit of their reserve cap for a decent WR. It does make more sense to use your cap to extend payers with up front money rather than backload contracts. It's like buying with cash vs credit cards which results in dead money in lieu of ridiculous interest. Of course you can’t exclusively use that tact, but a balanced approach is prudent. Skeletor The Invincible
So many teams are so far under the cap because teams have learned how to twist and turn the cap so as to get the most out of the least. Well, thats my theory at least.
Jay Master Jay
With Gibbs and our coaching staff players will want to play for us. This will be a big advantage in FA.
citigent
yes smith will give us more cap room plus the gibbs and this staff will be very attractive to FA.
Hogwash
How will the Titans be able to keep Kearse if they are that far over?
Chrisbob74
They need to get a deal in place for him before free agency with a low cap figure for 2004 (back load the deal in other words) and then make some cuts, they will save money with Wychecks retirement and they will cut Eddie George and a few others or rework some deals. Teams in general are handling the cap a lot better, trying to avoid boom and bust runs.
EvoSkins
I keep hearing that Indy is in serious cap trouble and that they will have to do some acrobatics to resign Manning. Anyone they cut may be good to look at.
Hogwash
Yeah, you can gauruntee that Indy will keep the Big Three, Manning, Harrison, and James. I think Micheal Lewis is a FA, he might be a good pick up for a returner with Morton.
TODD
Those cap numbers will undoubtedly change with retirements and cuts. Bruce Smith won't count against assuming he retires (hopefully), for example.
atloldskin
The problem with Indy is that they don't have any DL that we could use. We need to focus on the Titans and Saints and what they do with their quality DL.
KevinMac
Tom's right, those numbers are off a bit. They are at least 2 million off of the 'Skins, just from things we know.
carlsbadd
I don't understand why Philly will let Duce , Taylor and Vincent go this year. It would make sense to keep your core together. Even is these guys are approaching the end of thier prime (Duce excluded) it would make sense to keep them.
