inmate running the asylum
O.k. guys -- and Blondie too -- it is exactly 39 days until the March 3 trading deadline opens and free agency begins. The main question is whether Dan Snyder will make a big splash in signing big-name free agents this year or not? Remember 2002? Bam. Day one the Skins sign all-pro Jesse Armstead. 1st week last year. Bam! He trades for Trung Canidate. Within the first week he signs Dave Fiore, Randy Thomas, Brandon Noble, Regan Upshaw, Jon Hall, Lennie Friedmann, Rob Johnson, and Tre Johnson. 2nd week last year. Bam! He signs Patrick Johnson, Matt Bowen, Laveranues Coles and Chad Morton to contracts. Personally, I think Dan Snyder will again make a big splash. The only difference is that he will ask for Joe Gibbs opinions on players beforehand. Recall that even under Gibbs, Bobby Beathard used to go after name players, such as John Riggins who was signed as a free agent. So I dont think much will change. But what do you guys think and who do you think we will sign? With 6,000 registered members, I expect more than a crappy 100 voters this time.
chazz2
I think he will go for kearse, howard, right off the bat. Duce or dillion depending how much dillion will cost. Burnell get release we will pick him up to, Gibbs wants a good backup veteran.
MidPennSkin
We need a whole new DL. That means signing 2 UFAs and taking 2 DLs with our first 2 draft picks. The worst possible picks, but the flashiest, would be Kearse and Sapp (and Dillon). I hope that doesn't happen. None of those guys are worth what they will cost, and we could be looking at a repeat of Stubblefield and Hugh Douglas - get the big bucks and then coast to retirement. I'd prefer signing Wistrom and Robaire Smith, then drafting Udeze and Dockett (if possible). That would get our season off to a great start. We should also pick up a good blocking TE like Kleinsasser, and maybe Duce Staley.
dieselfan44
I'd like to see Duece as a redskin. D-line definetly needs help. I think we will get Kearse if he's available. If we can pick up another from free ageny and one in the draft we'll be in buisness. I don't want to see a one or two year deal if we get big names. We need commitment from these players to be redskins for a long time. No one wants to see a repeat of the Deion Sanders era where we had the names and no chemistry. coachreiter
the redskins are definately going to make another big splash in FA this year... i mean come on it is in snyders BLOOD to sign players to big contracts. kearse and dillion and maybe smith are the guys im looking at for us to sign, however it isnt entirely out of the question for us to pick up kearse AND sapp and trade for dillion. dieselfan44 said "We need commitment from these players to be redskins for a long time. No one wants to see a repeat of the Deion Sanders era where we had the names and no chemistry." i agree with this but tell me... kearse is 25 or so and sapp is 30. dillion is 27. we can get big contracts out of them. sapp is the oldest there and he is not even that old.sapp is still the impact player he once was, you just dont see it because he is now double teamed and mcfarland and rice roam around singled up. if sapp isnt worth it then why is he doubled on EVERY play. if we pick him and kearse up, then you wont see kearse in a slump either, we havent seen a healthy or as effective kearse in a year and a half now only because hes that teams ONLY pass rusher so he gets doubled... lets see teams double him AND sapp and still protect the qb with 1 guy on
Oldskool
id expect them to be more active this offseason than at any other time on Dan Snyder's tenure as owner of this franchise. Saying that, we may just get a few high profile players but Gibbs and Co may be looking for diamonds in the rough on other teams rosters and practice squads to fill holes/needs/wants. Old Glory
Here's the scoop guys so listen up: Kearse is negotiating a contract with the Titans ESPN is reporting so the Titans are going to keep Kearse. But................. Vinny Cerrato was seen leaving with Howard's agent at the senior bowl yesterday so Snyder is expecting to make an opening day strike with signing Howard. There's little doubt in my mind about that. If the skins can also sign Griffiths and come back and take Udeze with their first round selection then we will be in great shape. citigent
i think synder will get 1 or 2 big names at most and fill up the rest with some true grit guy exactly the way gibbs tells him to synders new roll is to wine and dine whoever gibbs wants then sit in his box and watch the skins go to the superbowl. Skyward72
No Doubt Synder will make a splash, as long as the Skins have cap space.
Chrisbob74
If Kearse isn't franchised we will head the queue I would expect. I can also see us ading a DT (Smith or Griffen) and making a run for a back, maybe Staley. I would be ok with these moves if the contracts aren't too mad and they were the only moves apart from some low priced depth deals.
Hogwash
My main concern is if we sign Sapp, can he and LaVar co-exist? Remember that much publicized statement. "Warren, I'm gonna get you." They seem to get along fine, since they hugged after the game, but still, those are two very volitile players. I think Kearse would be a great move. He's young and he is a differance maker. Dillion might be a good move. There is no doubt that he has heart and is wanting to prove that he is still one of the best RB's in the NFL. Sweet Sassy Molassy
I think Snyder is going to be a little more thoughtful in his approach this year. I don't see him going all "Happy go jacky" like he has in the past, because he'll have Gibbs and others in there with the experience to tell him if it's a good decision or not. citigent
if dillon can stay healthy 3 mil a year isnt to bad for that , plus his attitude has been bad but how much has he put up with playing for the bungles his whole career.
Hogwash
Yeah, it's gotta be frustrating to bust your ass week in and week out and just continually lose. I'd pretty disgusted too.
EvoSkins
Something lost in the draft/FA confusion? Will the Skins still go after Daryl Gardener?
scottb
Kinda agree with Cableguy. I expect the Skins to chase and sign 1 prominent Dlineman. All other acquisitions will most likely be in the FA blue collar section.
Monks04
I would be surprised if the Skins use a lot of money on free agents this year. Obviously, they need to upgrade the DL and RB positions. I think Joe Gibbs really feels like he can find some diamonds in the rough. Guys that have good character and will work their tails off for him. Sapp would be great to get but I don't think that he is Joe Gibbs type of guy. Gibbs likes the guys that will do their talking on the field and not off the field like Sapp does. I think at this point the Skins should trade the 5th pick in the draft and and move down to get several picks and get some decent Defensive Lineman. Pick up Jerome Bettis (a bruising back) and let him run behind the Hogs (part 2).
coachreiter
hogwash...yes lavar and sapp had words but come on when you have 2 of the best players at there position NEEDING a victory and needing your fans support why wouldnt you say something...he didnt say im gonna take a gun and shoot you...he was simply saying if you line up on offense im going to tackle your big fat ass. i think if they were on the same team it would be the most entertaining team in the league. and with the freak. OH GOD. on nfl WIRED they would have to wire all 3 to get all the audio

He isn't signing with them. Reports are that he's negotiating with the franchise tag, and that would probably be the only way to keep him. That being said, in order to franchise him, between other FAs, other contracts to sign, and the rookie pool, they'd need to free up about 30 mil in cap space. They're already about 16-18 mil over, and after they free that up they'd still need money for other things. It is unlikely that they'll restrict themselves that much for one player, kinda like SF's doing with TO. You just can't commit that much green to one guy when you're in so much cap trouble and you need to keep other people. I've heard that their cap hell is SO bad that they probably couldn't easily keep Kearse or Robaire Smith even if they wanted to.
Hogwash
I don't disagree with what was said, i'm just wondering if those 2 players, as passionate, and as volitile as the are, could work together on a defense.
coachreiter
i hear ya, i think sapp and lavar would love to play with each other though, i think they would compliment each other nicely, if lavar blitz's and misses and sapp cleans up though would be huggin like it was planned like that, if sapp gets his hands around the RB and he loses him and lavar gets him down, they will look at each other and jus be like i got your back dawg dont worry. i think with such high profiles and knowing they are both that damn good i think they would probably hang out every night talkin about how good each other is
GrimReefa
I would be very surprised if the Titans can sign Kearse. And if they can sign Kearse, then they won't be able to sign Smith. If we could sign Smith and then draft Lavalais or Dockett with our second round pick, we will have completely remade the interior of our defensive line. I think Cobbs out of Arkansas would be a terriffic pick-up in round 3 or 4. I'm of the opinion that you can't go wrong with an SEC back, even one drafted in later rounds (Stephen Davis, anyone?), and Cobbs is 6'1, 225 (again, reminds me of Stephen Davis, who is 6', 230), so you know that boy can pack a punch - you probably saw him run over a couple of guys on his way to the endzone. With Champ Bailey resigning and the #5 pick to sign, we probably won't be able to do too much else, but we'll see.
mcgraw238
I'm not buying the Dillon to skins rumor. 3mill/yr plus giving up a pick will be costly. I think Gibbs is going to look at tape and realize that the team was able to run last season with the current group (he will love the Rock) and Gibbs will advocate using the resources in other areas. We may not have a feature back right now, but the problem last year was that SOS would not stay committed to running the ball. That said, I think we will draft Winslow or Taylor (or trade down for Udeze or Harris) and then grab a DL in round two (Dockett, Starks, Dwan Edwards, or Lavais). I also think we will sign two lineman in FA. Probably, Darren Howard and R. Smith. I think our defense was better than it showed last year; having an experienced D coordinator will improve the play of the D.
atloldskin
I would also rather have Cobbs with the #3 then Corey Dillion for the #3 and $3 million.
