As the trade rumors start it seems this board likes SD doesn't want Dillion. It would be useful to look at the statistics (NFL.COM):

Dillon 6' 1" - 225 pounds

Davis 6' - 230 pounds

Dillion born 10/24/75

Davis born 3/1/74

Dillion 7 years Games Played 107 - Started - 95

Davis 8 years Games Played 113 - Started - 89

Dillion

Rushes: 1865 - Yds 8061 - AVG 4.3 - TD 45 - 20+yd 54 - FD 402

Recept: 192 - Yds 1482 - AVG 7.7 - TD 5 - 20+yd 8 - FD 64

Fumbles: 20 Lost: 12

Davis

Rushes: 1701 - Yds 7234 - AVG 4.3 - TD 53 - 20+Yds 35 - FD 389

Recept: 160 - Yds 1327 - 8.3 Yds - TD 3 - 20+Yds 10 - FD 57

Fumbles: 22 Lost: 10

Comparisons:

1) Dillion played 6 fewer games started 6 more in 1 less year;

2) Dillon 164 more carries 827 more yards;

3) Dillon and Davis exact same avg per carry

4) Dillon 32 more receptions 155 more yards

5) Davis better receiving avg 8.3 -- 7.7

6) Dillon 49 tds -- Davis 56 tds

7) Dillion touches for 20+yds 62 -- Davis 45

8) Dillion 466 touches for first downs -- Davis 446

9) Dillon 2057 touches 20 fumbles 12 lost

Davis 1861 touches 22 fumbles 10 lost

10) Dillon 1000 yd seasons 6 -- Davis 4

11) Over their careers Dillon's team went 34-78

Davis' team went 69-60-1

Conclusion:

Their stats are remarkably close for such long careers. Setting aside attitude for the sake of argument (Gibbs can work with flaky players). Dillon played on a much worse team that won half as many games (likely had to pass more from being behind). It's hard to see that if we would want to have Davis why we wouldn't want to have Dillon if the price was right:

I love SD. I don't really care for Dillon and his constant whining. But the numbers are the numbers. Food for thought.
