Owens sounds off on Garcia

Receiver says 49ers can't make Super Bowl run unless team changes QB

January 22, 2004

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Controversial receiver Terrell Owens kept a low profile for most of the season after 49ers coach Dennis Erickson warned him early on against further outbursts.

But Owens is once again answering questions -- and stirring it up.

On his official Web site (terrellowens.com), Owens has been taking dead aim this week at quarterback Jeff Garcia as he answers fans' questions.

Owens is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and he has documented on his Web site -- mostly in upper-case letters and crude shorthand -- that he does not want to be on the same team with Garcia.

In response to a fan's question about his impending free agency, Owens wrote in an entry dated Monday:

"I'm willing 2 workout a contract if the Niners cn get a QB 2 match my skills as a receiver! I wanna win a Superbowl & I cn b a big part of that, a receiver is only as good as his QB!"

To a fan's plea to not leave the 49ers, Owens responded:

"Hopefully, I dn't go anywhere but it dn't look good plus we need a QB 2 make a run @ the Superbowl."

Owens' agent, David Joseph, did not return a call to his cell phone. But 49ers director of public relations Kirk Reynolds confirmed Wednesday the Web site belongs to Owens.

Owens and Garcia have been at odds for at least two years despite earning three consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl together prior to this season.

Early last season, Garcia had some harsh words for Owens when he was seen dozing off during an offensive meeting, according to a team source. A few weeks later, the two nearly came to blows in the team's Santa Clara weight room when they bumped into each other on their day off. That came after Owens criticized his quarterback and publicly backed Tim Rattay to be the starting quarterback.

When a fan questioned Owens' online jab at Garcia, the receiver responded in blistering fashion. Owens went so far as to cite Garcia's recent arrest for suspicion of drunken driving.

"I'm nt blaming the whole season on him," Owens wrote, "But bein a QB holds big responsibilties!!!! Havin said that, how about his DUI situation? Everybody wants 2 criticize me 4 this & that, but hv I represented the 49ers n tht fashion, nope -- I dn't think so! I'm nt the problem, I'm the answer! If I cn't get a QB 2 help us win the Superbowl ---- I wn't b back!"

Other notable comments on his Web site in recent days include:

A fan asked Owens what frustrated him the most about Garcia's play: His inaccurate passes; checking down to the secondary receiver too quickly; or his tendency to escape the pocket and run too soon?

Owens' answer: "All of the above!"

Owens questioned why Rattay was replaced at quarterback after the 49ers compiled a 2-1 record while Garcia missed three games with an ankle sprain.

"This past season we had a chance 2 still make the playoffs & they left Jeff n there!" Owens wrote.

Owens offered glowing praise of third-string quarterback Ken Dorsey, the 49ers' seventh-round draft pick from Miami.

"Ken Dorsey is the next Joe Montana waitin 2 happen! U heard it here 1st."

Last week, 49ers consultant Bill Walsh said on KNBR radio that Owens drops too many passes to fetch a $20 million signing bonus. Owens says that was part of a ploy to lower his market value.

Owens' wrote: "Everybody will read thru that, they're jus tryin 2 keep me 4 cheap."

Why not? They're Owens words. He wrote them. It's his site. Owen's hasn't disowned the quotes or said that someone else was answering questions for him. Perfectly legitimate story.

He's hilarious. If the guy could just keep his mouth shut, he might get his $20m. He's like the Howard Dean of the NFL. He just can't resist -- and everyone's watching.

I mean, Should Owens quotes off of a fan response be credible?

I don't really believe so. Bad story.

Skeletor, it's HIS website. Are you saying he was misquoted on his own website?

Hey don't rip Manley like that. He was a class act when compared to Owens. I never saw Manley whining like Owens.

But to tell the truth, Jeff Garcia, despite a couple of good years never really has produced like Montana or Young. He has alot to live up 2, and getting DUI's doesn't help.

I am betting that TO would prefer to play in Baltimore, with that group of egomaniacs. They have an equally good shot at getting to the Super Bowl every year, and the weather is a bit better. Billick has already worked with head-case WR's, so TO would be nothing new to him.

And how about that Dorsey quote:

"Ken Dorsey is the next Joe Montana waitin 2 happen! U heard it here 1st."

While I am a firm believer in Ramsey, this would have been our smart pick in the 7th of that draft. In looking at the writing style it kind of looks like the kind of grammar Prince would use...

Football isn't carpentry.

That analogy would fit if he'd blamed dropped balls on his hands or eyes, or something of that nature.

TO sees this guy everyday in practice, an he sees the limitations of Jeff Garcia. However, he shouldn't voice those opinions in public.
