Eagles: Owens would love to be an Eagle

News

Wide receiver Terrell Owens, who will be a free agent in March, believes that he can get the Eagles to the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. "I'd definitely love to come to Philly," Owens told columnist Stephen A. Smith on Wednesday. "Those guys have gotten to the NFC championship game three years in a row. Absolutely no disrespect to the players they have, but there's something out there they need to get them over the hump. I definitely believe I'm that missing piece." Owens later added, "I just know what I bring to the table, as far as my ability. Not to take away from guys on their squad. I just don't see them being playmakers. And I, myself, can definitely benefit from McNabb's arm. I think McNabb is a great QB. I think he's in a similar situation that I'm in out in San Fran. A receiver is only as good as his quarterback. My abilities rely on a QB's ability and his arm. Jeff [Garcia] is not someone that's a pocket passer that's going to throw 50 yards down the field. On the flip side, McNabb can throw that pass, but has guys that struggle to turn them into something."

Football observers everywhere have spent the last few days tearing apart the Eagles' pathetic wide receiver group, and the local media has discussed what the solution is. Owens is the marquee free agent wide receiver on the market this offseason, but there is some debate amongst the Philadelphia media as to if the Eagles would consider signing him. Some would rather see the club go after Seahawks' free agent receiver Darrell Jackson. Head coach Andy Reid has offered up no distinct assessment of his personnel, but we expect the Eagles to do something in this area over the offseason.

Take it for what it's worth, but a poster elsewhere who seems to have a contact within the Eagles' organization wrote that the Eagles will go after TO, but won't get into a bidding war.

I'll go against the grain and say I hope we don't get him, or at least pay a ridiculous amount to do so. I do think team chemistry matters, and can't be sure that he won't hurt it. I don't know much about the personality of Darrell Jackson of the Seahawks, but he's a FA, has solid numbers, and would be a serious upgrade over Pinkston and Thrash. He's also younger and must have less baggage than TO.

Iggle in Ex- i heard about that Darrell Jackson thing as well, there is no way that Andy Reid would break his ultra-conservative approach! Wrong, well - face it he has lost 3 straight and everybody is getting fed up, fans, players - hopefully Andy Reid is also. This will be the turning point and should show what kind of moves he/Eagles front office are willing to make to get over this gigantic hump. Being a Redskin fan - I hope like hell they dont sign T.O.

Redskinsnation, we'll have to see. I agree with you that if history is any judge, the only way TO plays at the Linc is if he signs with a team that plays an away game there next year. But even Reid must be wondering what the hell good being $24 mil under the cap is if you don't use some of it. He has to be feeling some pressure to get a WR with a pulse. At least I hope so.

Way to be humble about it T.O. But seriously, tell us how you really feel.

Iggle in Ex-everybody is talkin smack about your team, but they are right there. Minor tweeks of the defense (only because they will loose a couple of vets) and some very good or even decent acquisitions at the WR position will solidify their status. Think about it I honestly dont think they can get worse-the nucleus of the team is still in tact.

Reid should do the following

#1. Give up his Front Office duties

#2. Let the GM keep your DB's

#3. Get 2 WR's for the price of Owens. Make Thrash #3. Cut the rest.

#4. Ask for a LB in the 1st round

You don't say. Seriously, I think a lot of it is warranted, although some is a little silly. Last year Reid's gamble of not going after older team vets paid off; Mitchell, Douglas et al didn't really contribute this past year. But this year's crop worries me - I think Staley, Vincent, Taylor, and Emmons will still be good players for the next few years. There could be a big dropoff in talent next year, especially as the gap between the Eagles and the rest of the NFC East narrows.

I disagree with everything except No. 1. I don't mind seeing Taylor/Vincent leave as long as they bring in one CB to replace the two of them (Brown and Sheppard will be fine at #2, #3, they just aren't ready for #1 role yet).

Thrash is useless. Mitchell was the best WR this year. Bring in Owens, and sign a 2nd tier WR, or keep Pinkston at #2 and Mitchell at #3. Move Thrash to #4 and KR duties or cut him.

LB isn't an issue. They can spend that pick on a WR/DE/CB and I'd be much happier. Wayne and Emmons (unless Emmons leaves, but I think he'll stay) are good. Simoneau is undersized but played very well the 1st half of the year. When the DLine started to get depleted, and FBs were reaching the LBs, Simoneau started to wear down. He'll be starting next year.

Well, their OLine reminds me of the Redskins actually. They have some 'names' like Tra Thomas, Runyan, Mayberry etc., but overall they didn't do well this year. I don't think they need to replace starters yet, but they have to add depth, and certainly something has to be done at WR. Pinkston and Thrash can't be the two starters next year. It just can't happen. :shot:
