Leonard Washington
I've been watching alot of older NFL games (70's and 80's) on tape and espn classic. Is it me or do the guys back then look bigger than now. I'm not saying the guys now are small but the lineman and linebackers were HUGE! They aren't as cut as they are today but these are some big mofos. Anybody else notice it or is the slimming effects of cameras today? or could it be the pads? Die Hard
It's the way the game was played. You could take big guys back then and the size advantage was a competitive edge. But now the players are more refined and athletic... and the advantage of "pure" size is nullified somewhat.
Hogwash
The players maybe be bigger, for example "Too Tall" Jones, what was he like 6'9'' or something? You don't see that today, for the simple fact that Bigger isn't always better. The guy in the NFL today are big, strong, and fast. So getting hit by a linebacker could be compared to getting hit by a car.
Om
If you go by weight, the opposite is actually true. Check out the tape of Super Bowl XVII, when the original Hogs crushed Miami's No Name Defense. The idea of a line like many teams have today, where the lightest starter may go around 310, would have made the 1982 Joe Gibbs' hair stand up on end. Leonard Washington
i think you have a point Om. I've heard reports that the number of 300lb guys in the NFL is amazing compared to the number of there were back in the day. Its pretty obvious to see that the guys back then weren't as lean and probably ate and drank whatever they wanted as long as they maintained weight. so along the same lines, would an average nfl player today (say trung candidate or lional dalton) be an probowler back then? Also would dickerson be able to rush for the most yards ever against the type of defenses/athletes there are today? i believe there are star players of the past that would be able to compete well today. Ignatius J.
I think star players are star players. Joe montana would light this league now like he did then. However, the average player today is far superior, especially along the lines. They look bigger because they are slower and move like oafs. Today's 310 lb lineman can move well. It isn't a beer gut. -DB
panthro
In fact, on the HBO special that aired the Dexter Manley interview, they had a segment about NFL linemen. The point was that they are much bigger today than they were 10 years ago. The second point was about the health risks that these big guys take by throwing caution to the wind and getting huge. Many are suffering all kinds of problems after retirement. Upshaw of the Players Assoc. was called out big time for keeping the players informed and educated about the health risks. That was a crazy interview. Amazing that the one guy from the Saints died five days after he was interviewed.

Those films do close ups on all the players, compared to today you get more of the entire field. The guys today are much bigger, look at the hogs, we were the first to have a 300 lb lineman, now they are up to what
buckeyeG
Yeah...I remember when the "fridge"(W.Perry)was concidered a freak of nature back then. What was he 310lbs. or so? I believe at his time he was the only 300lb. guy on the field. Now he would'nt hardly be noticed.
